Is my HD 6670 slowing my computer?

I have an i5-6500 with 16 GB of RAM, an HD 6670 GPU and a Samsung 850 EVO 250 GB.

I do not play games. I only use it to surf the web and do some basic Word and Excel work. It should be more than enough for my needs and most of the time it is pretty fast.

However some web pages take a long time to load. In fact they often take less time on my iPad Pro 12.9.

I use Chrome mostly but Internet Explorer is just as slow for these pages

Do you think my HD 6670 is slowing down my computer or do you thing I have a configuration problem?

I use the HD 6670 instead of the onboard GPU because I use 3 monitors.

A 6670 should be fine for everything except possibly home theater applications like watching a high-definition video that's encoded with h.264 or h.265.

Next time this happens, open Task Manager, show all processes, go to details, tab, sort by CPU %. Under normal loads the System Idle process should be around 90%.

If your browser shows at the top of the list with very high CPU, maybe you are visiting pages with too much junk on them like Flash ads. Maybe you've let some extension get installed that injects ads or other garbage.

You might have some other kind of infection that is using your PC to in a botnet to attack sites, or is injecting ads and referral links into pages, or committing click fraud, or just doing keylogging to steal passwords and such.

Or it might be something "harmless" like Windows Update has gone berserk and is chewing through all your CPU cycles on 1-2 cores. That's happened to me on one PC. The process this shows in is svchost.exe.

Lastly, maybe nothing at all is wrong and the sites you visit just show a lot of extra garbage on PC that they don't show to iOS browsers.

If the GPU was dying it would be slowing down your whole system(like when stress testing GPU) or there would be a lot of flickers, maybe black/green screens on video, etc... web browsing being slow tells me with 99.9% certainty that its not your GPU.

Maybe your SSD is too congested and you need to trim it, even these days and even with the EVO(which is one of the best) its still a problem. Most SSD's, especially consumers ones and small size ones tend to get saturated too much and drop speeds by over 50%.

But it can be a number of things. Maybe your internet is slow, maybe the DNS doesn't route the websites you named properly, maybe you have too much junk files, maybe you have viruses, etc...

I'd monitor performance in task manager when using your browser and visiting those and other pages to see if maybe something is eating up your CPU performance, maybe something is eating up your SSD performance, etc... Just recently it seemed some program I think it was Spotify was writing and rewriting the same data literally tens of thousands of time while it was running(actively or not) and even killing SSD's, reducing their lifespan from 5+ years to like few months and making them terribly slow.

So maybe its some program with similar issues.

Then I suggest you use a cleaner like Ccleaner and remove junk files, reset your DNS and even use an alternative one, Google's DNS is quite fast(though probably not very private), but just to test things use it. Finally run an antivirus scan to check for viruses.

Rather ironically, the iGPU would be as fast if not faster than that relic of a GPU. Doesn't your mobo have three graphics outputs?

I find that a little hard to believe but I'm not confident enough to say it isn't possible.

The Skylake HD530 iGPU is no slouch. I used it for a bit to play Skyrim (vanilla) @ 1080P (low, I think). Pretty amazing, when you think about it.

Yeah, the 6670 wasn't a very fast GPU even when it was new. I'd try using the integrated graphics only and see if you see a performance hit.
