is my HDD ok?

Hi guyz,
Actually i got my gaming pc first time as i was using pentium D acer laptop before it, dont know much about these stuff, so m here for serious help!

As i got new PC and my HDD is Caviar Green 500GB but as i only have one copy of my data, and its very important, so just need help that what precautionary measures i should take to keep even that single copy of data prevented from loss and how to keep running HDD healthy for more time (atleast 2-3years). And if backup is more important than plz also mention that which source of keeping backup securely and more reliable cuz i m confused whether i should write my data on DVDs or buy another internal HDD (caviar black etc) or external hdd!

I installed tunup utlities and that crappy software just ruined my C:/ files Blue screen came once and startup and shutdown is slow!

Tell me if there is need to only format C:/ drive or i have to format whole HDD?

tunup utlities ......1) misspelled 2) probably some spyware

stop watching the pronz. viruses

just do a fresh install of windows

make sure that you have a SECOND COPY of anything important. It doesn't matter much if it is on another HD, or on a pile of DVDs. Just make certain that you have a backup. Storage devices can fail at any time.

Firstly, WD Green is a bad choice to begin with as a boot drive. It is slow just for the sake of saving power and I've never heard good things about it being a boot drive. You can't ensure that the drive will be reliable for # of years, it is unpredictable and how long it is capable of operating varies.

Having done backups with DVDs, I could assure you that is a bad choice of backup as it is a hassle especially when you have a lot of data to burn every time and you're limited to a 4.7GB space that would not accept files larger than its limit. The best choice would be an external HDD that will most likely be in a drawer most of the time.

I've used TuneUp Utilities for a very long time and it has never been problematic to me. If you're formatting, you only need to do it with C drive assuming that D drive is where your important data is stored.

There are many cases from users whose problems are attributed from the use of WD Green as a boot drive. I can't exactly pinpoint to you the exact reason as it is my personal experience dealing with user issues similar to this.

It is mostly WD's undoing by implementing IntelliPower and IntelliPark which parks the read head and slows down pretty much the whole drive to conserve power. While the idea is great, the execution is bad. It is rated to do this after 8 seconds of idling which is too short. I have a Samsung F4EG which does spin down after a certain amount of time but it is definitely not as short as 8 seconds, read more here. There will always be a tradeoff when choosing drives. You can have maximum power efficiency or maximum read/write performance but you can't have the best of both worlds.

I would suppose they are slow, have high latency and low rpm, and that their power-saving feature interfere with the requirements for a drive running a modern OS.

I have a WD Green drive (non-AF) 1TB drive as the only drive in my HTPC. Haven't had too much of a problem with it.

OP: You could also backup to online service if you don't mind your data being held by a 3rd party. Also you should only need to backup documents and the like, not entire programs, so the amount of space you use is relatively small.
