I have the Hitachi HDS721010CLA332 on a cavalry dock for external data storage purposes, i have had it for 16 months, but only have made like 2months usage during that time span just for backing up and forgetting. Well yesterday after a long time of not accessing it I hooked it up and began downloading a large file to it from the internet, and windows telling me the file has crc errors? I have never experienced hard drive failure before this drive. I have always been a WD guy. I tried playing with the drive by copying stuff back and forth and programs ring up the CRC errors too. First i got in windows 7, messages to format drive but that stopped. CRC only problems much earlier today with chkdsk confirming when i made it scan the drive, and now at the time of this writing i dont experience these issues anymore?! Tried playing with the drives again programs dont warn of CRC, also tried chkdsk and passed with 0 errors...lol.
I'd like to know what software can I use to determine if there is really bad sectors on it? Id hate to make it warranty bound if there is really nothing wrong with it and possibly subsititute it for a shorter ticking bomb one. I hate the warranty hassle anyway, but ofcourse data loss is a greater hassle. Everything on the drive is on another backup anyway long before this issue was present. I just want to be ensured that this drive will go south soon, if i will send it for replacement.
