is my motherboard dying

This just started about a week ago but every now and then when I turn the computer on I get no display as if graphics card is dead. I can turn the pc off for a while, turn it back on and it starts as normal. I have opened up the pc and made sure the card is seated ok and it is. This card is an 6800gt which has an extra 12v conector. could this be a power issue with the card not getting enough power. Its a 500w power supply but not the best of makes and wonder if this is the problem. I have to say that over the years of building PCs I have changed a few power supplys due to problems but usualy PCs that wont boot, never had this problem before. Any ideas anyone.

What's your MB ?

On mine, in BIOS there is a setting to select Video Card output. The default setting is "Auto", the other settings are "PCI" and "PCIex".

When I left mine at Auto, I had it boot with no Video -> it was attempting to output to the PCI Video Card (is there even such a thing?). I've set it to PCIex and haven't had a problem since.

You may want to look around in your BIOS to see if you have a similar type setting.

just a quick reply to this as its late and time for bed. The motherboard only has an 8xAGP slot and no PCI express its a slightly older asus board, not sure of the number as other pc is shut down for the night, will check in morning and post the make and model number.

How old is the mobo? Is it the newest BIOS? How many amps are on the 12v rail on your power supply? Maybe the mobo's AGP slot is going bad? So many variables... so little time...

I have a feeling I know whats going on here, on further investigation I have found in device manager I now have an extra network card and a second sound card that has a yellow exclamation mark by it, also when you boot the computer the asus splash screen comes up which I know I disabled in the bios. This leads me to belive that the bios battery may be dead and the computer is going to default settings. hence the onboard sound and network which I know I disabled have now made an apperance and it may explain why the graphics card keeps disapearing as it may be looking for a pci card which I know is a option in the bios. I will post later on today after I have checked out my hunch. Also I have another PC which I have to fix for someone so its a busy time this weekend.
