I attempted to overclock my 1.1ghz T-Bird on a MSI K7T KT133a motherboard. I think I went to high and now the comp freezes in acouple seconds. I cleared the cmos and set it to defaults but still it freezes.

The cpu is fine since i tested in another mobo.

motherboard posts, all lights are green on the motherboard. I can get into bios but it freezes after a few seconds. I can get to dos also but the computer freezes. No odd smells.

Oh and the motherboard exactly is a MSI K7T Pro2-a

Are your RAM timings too high? Perhaps try backing off on the timings?

What about your AGP or PCI dividers? Any chance they didn't get reset properly?

Are you not able to even enter the BIOS, at default? What about lower than default?

Have you tried your RAM on the different computer, to weed out a RAM problem?

That board is awfully stable I have one of those and I've done horrible nasty things to it and it still works. I would try removing the CPU and heatsink. Remove the heatsink and reapply the thermal paste or whatever it is you are using and try it again. If you can try a diff cpu in there I'd be more inclined to think you killed the chip before the MB.

the chip works because I bought a new motherboard for the time being. And it works fine with the ram and the new motherboard.

Oh and I never used artic silver, I always used the "gum" that came with the heatsink. Yes hate me but I just found out about artic silver .

my guess is it was too hot ...

did you check the temps in the BIOS before it freezes?

hmmmm ... well it'a alil hot ...

.. but not enough to freeze while in BIOS ... IMO

But 45C for W2K boot is bad

My XP2600+ is 28C right now.... (with 1.68v And 11.5 x 192Hmz) ... my old XP1600+ ran around 34C at idle if I remember right...

I also had a 1.2 T-bird that I had using 1.78v ran 32-34C idle and 47-51C loaded

(also ... these reads are in W2K ... My last 2 MB's needed W2K BIOS registry tweaks to "cool" the AMD chip
Both MB ran my AMD chips hot while in BIOS)

Sounds like you moved the CPU out to another board already... Is it 45C also? in BIOS?

OH! ... and is the thermal resistor on the chip or on MB?
(On the MB means the chip is actually hotter)

the thermal resisitor is on the motherboard. And the 1.1ghz t-bird in my other system runs at 42c IDLE and 45c Load.

I don't think that his Temps are too high to load w/o freezing up. My XP2000 was running at 45c for many weeks w/o any problems (Until I relapped / reseated the HS/F and got it down to 40C).

Are you sure it's not a Video card problem? Were you OC'ing that at the same time?

I have had a faulty video card freeze my system before. Swaped cards and problem was solved.

yah ... I dont think heat is the issue

Next time try
Unistalling any extra cards and stuff

just,,, one Mem stick , Vid card, and HD.
Clear CMOS.
Then see...

Narrows things down ... got an extra chip you can borrow to test?
