I was messing around with my Athlon 1 Gig, 128 Mb ram, and not it wont boot anymore. Everytime I turn the power on, the heatfan starts running, but there is no display, no startup beep, nothing. What could be wrong? The processor isnt fried, is it? Is it the motherboard then?

help is appreciated. thanks.

Unplug power cord. Reseat ram and video card. Reset cmos. If you still have no beeps, you have problems.

In your manual it will usually tell you. If you don't have the manual it is usually near the battery. Look for a jumper over two pins and a third one should be next to it. Take the jummper off pins 1 & 2 and slide it onto onto 2&3. Then wait around ten seconds and move it back onto 1&2.

It doesnt say anything about jumpers. It says to take out the battery for a while to clear cmos. However, I do see a clr_cmos label on the mobo, but dont see any jumpers. dont know what to do. Im going to try the battery thing. Lets see if it works.

ok, i took the battery out for a while, then put back in, but same result. Blank screen and no beeps. Fan does start up and ram led lights up, which leads me to believe that my processor is fine, right?

Ok if your fans spin up and you don't get video, it can be one of 3 things:

1) CPU
2) Ram
3) Motherboard

More than likely it's either the CPU or Ram, because you won't get video if either one of them is bad. You need to explain "messing around" in more detail. Are you overclocking your cpu? If so, then I would lean more towards your cpu being fried. Basically, you are going to need to go thru a process of elimination. First try to borrow similiar ram from a friend (i.e. take out your ram and use your friends ram). Try booting the system with his memory. If the system still doesn't boot then your memory is ok. Now you have a good idea it is either the CPU or Motherboard. Next step is to either take out your cpu and try to find another motherboard to test it in or get another cpu and put it into your motherboard. Unfortunately, this isn't an easy thing to accomplish, because it's not easy to find older cpus and motherboards to test out your parts. Do you live near a small computer shop? If so, they may be able to take your cpu and put it into another motherboard and tell you if it works. If it does, then you have a bad motherboard. I just had to do the same thing you are doing. I ended up having a fried cpu, but I overclocked my Athlon and I understood that could happen. It lasted me a year and a half so it wasn't a big deal. Good luck.

Be sure to have the power cord physically removed from the PSU or the wall when resetting cmos. Sometimes it won't reset otherwise.

if you didnt increase CPU voltage, then id bet it is the cmos that needs clearing, like superkdogg sugested, remove the power cable from the PSU , remove CMOS battery, then wait 20minutes.

No I wasnt overclocking. I just took my old system apart to see how it works. It was working fine till I ordered a new system to build from scratch. Never got the new system to boot up. The new system was an Athlon XP 2800, with a gigabyte K7 tritron series motherboard, 512MB of ram. I never got it to work. But the motherboard was backwards compatible, or so it said. Thinking that maybe my new chip was faulty, I tried the new motherboard with my old Athlon 1 Gig chip. Still didnt work. And now my old system stopped working also. Someone said that since the fan was running, cpu and mobo are fine, so I ordered a new Video Card, ATI radeon 7000. Still same results. That was my 'messing around'.

I know atleast the RAM from the old system is fine, so its either the mobo or cpu. How do I figure out which one is it? How can you be so sure its the mobo?
