i just bought a new mobo, cpu and vid card and am wondering if i still have enough juice in my psu.

what i currently have:
P4 2.8@3.4
Asus P4P800E Deluxe
2GB OCZ PC3200
ATI X850XT
Creative X-Fi
WD Raptor 74gb
WD Caviar SE 80gb
DVDRW
CDRW
Antec P160 case w/ 2 120mm fans

what i just bought:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester core
Asus A8N-SLI
Evga 7800GT OC

swapping in the above 3 items and re-using the rest of my stuff, will my Antec True 430 still run it all? this one: http://www.antec.com/us/productDetails.php?ProdID=20430 not a true power 2.0

No way, man! You need at least 480!

Plus keep upgrades in mind. What if you wanna add SLI? Will you buy ANOTHER PSU? My opinion is to get a very nice PSU and discount it from future upgrades. I bought the enermax noisetaker 600w and couldn't be happier. Super stable power. Though it was a bit pricey.

Also the Thermaltake Silent Purepower is an good choice. I've had it for a year on another PC and it doesn't crash my system :-D

BTW, use newegg

Thermaltake

Enermax

Bollocks, it's enough.

You don't have all that much comfort room to play in there, but there is no way on earth that is going to ever hit 400W of load.

If you do go SLI then i'd think about a new PSU, but it's more than able to run that rig. Check it on a calculator if you want there a thread on one hanging around here at the moment.

yea, you're fine. using the calculator (@ 100% Utilization), you come in at just under 400W

yeah, i found the calculator after i posted. pretty handy tool. although its all a moot point. i just realized the mobo has a 24pin atx connecter. my current psu only has a 20pin. gotta get a new one anyway. doh!

you can get this

Link

although I always like to get new PSUs with my new machines builds. it just feels right.

SPCR does a pretty indepth review of PSU's. I think their conclusion is most PC's only run in about the 200-300W range the majority of the time.

EDIT: that 20-24 pin adapter will only work for certain mobo's consult your mobo's manual before you try to do this.

wow. my x2 setup is only 350W. (I have a full system, w/ x700pro graphics and 2 DVD drives and all that) I don't know why at least 480W is needed for x2.

and i didn't know x2 consumes even more energy than the new PD.

thanks for the replies. i decided to spring for a new one anyway. i will prob be adding a 2nd vid card down the line and figured i'd put the new psu in now while the system is apart. got an enermax liberty 500w for a good deal. given what i spent on the new parts, what's an extra $100

Good choice.

I had several PSU that were supposedly "enough" according to the AT Forums experts here, just die. I spent $$$ before I learned about how PSU's are rated, their efficiency and basically false advertisement.

Since then, no one failure in any project.
