Is my PSU good enough for an XP 3000+

I have an enermax EG365-VE (which I think is pretty good quality) and I had my system running with a XP2100+, FX5200 video, two HDD, 2 CD-ROM and a few case fans. Not much else that draws power. I replaced the XP2100+ with an XP3000+. It posted at 1300, I went into the bios and changed it to the 3000+ setting. rebooted, everything was fine and when it booted into XP I got a weird message that norton could start. I restarted, it didn't show any CPU speed so I hit reset and she wouldn't post at all. Fans would still spin and the LED on the motherboard was on but nothing else would happen. I thought maybe the CPU was hooped so I replaced it with the XP2100+ and nothing but spinning fans. Then put in an old Duron 700 and same thing. I tried a 250W PSU I have in another machine and it posted with the Duron 700. Sounds like the PSU to me. I don't want to try to run either of the XP CPUs with the 250W PSU.

My question is, would the 3000+ draw so much that it would kill the PSU? Or is this just a freak coincidence that my PSU packed it in when I swapped in the new CPU?

The Enermax PSU is about 2 years old.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

That PSU should have been more than enough for what you were running.

I had mine doing an AXP 2500+, Radeon 9800pro, 2 optical drives, 5 harddrives.

Should I risk running the other PSU with the XP3000+ and not much else, to run the system temporarily? I bought the CPU used and I haven't really been able to test it because of this problem. The other PSU is actually a generic 300W, not 250W now that I look at it.

It's a "tsunami" made by L&C technology.

It says +5 & +3.3V combined 160W. Total output is 300W max.

I guess my other question is, what would be a good one to replace the enermax with?

A7N8x. I've tried everything I could think of, including clearing the Bios.

I also tried the enermax in my spare computer and it wouldn't post.

Will it post with a different CPU, just not the 3000+? It posted for me with a Duron 700 and a different PSU. Haven't tried it with the 3000+.

I wouldn't touch that PSU with a ten foot pole. I'd strongly suggest not using it.

Can you give us a rundown of what you have tried already?

Also, can you give us your story, devilfish? Could help us find the problem.

I don't think I'd try to run my own system on an old 300watt L&C.

I actually had an L&C 250watt in my case with the enermax 350watt with the L&C powering all the fans to take some of the load off my enermax.

My L&C felt like a cheap toy as far as weight was concerned.

If you have a backup rig ( like the one you're posting on ), I'd say just order a new PSU and wait until it comes.

The XClio 450watt is a great one for the price. Too bad it's oos right now. (made by channelwell, same company that makes antecs).

Anything by Antec, Fortron, Enermax, Sparkle, Seasonic, OCZ, and some others that aren't coming to mind right now would be good options for you.

You could get away with another 350watt with that system, maybe even a really sturdy 300watt, but if you're planning on doing any upgrading in the future this would be a nice excuse to get a nice beefy powersupply that will last you for a while.

Basically I stripped it down to the bare minimum, CPU ,video card and Ram and tried to get it to run. Nothing. Like I said though, she'll run a Duron 700 with the other PSU, I'm just afraid to try to run that PSU with a faster chip.

I'm thinking I'll go buy another Enermax 365 PSU tomorrow and give that a try. If it works then I'll RMA the broken one and return the newer one when I get the replacement.

Have you tried taking the system out of the case and setting it up the on some cardboard?

Will the enermax PSU work in any other system?

As I already said, I tried the enermax in my other computer and it won't run it. I was at the point where I was going to try setting it up on a piece of cardboard when I thought I'd try the other PSU and voila, it ran the 700.

I'll pick up the new PSU tomorrow and post the results.

Ok, so I went and bought a new PSU and I ended up with the same problem. It booted at 1300, I went into the bios to reset the CPU speed, and this time it hung on the hardware monitor page.

At that point I thought maybe it's not the PSU so I tried the Enermax PSU in my other computer and this time it worked. It's powering this computer as we speak.

SO now I think it's probably the motherboard. I tried the 2100+ and the Duron 700 and neither would post with any of the 3 PSU I now have.

The next thing I try will be removing the motherboard from the case to inspect it and set it up oustide the case. When I first tried to replace the 2100+ with the 3000+ I had a heck of a time getting the fan off so I'm wondering if I tweaked something doing that. I don't have time to do that right now though, but when I do I'll post my results.
