Is my PVR-250 Tuner card useless now?

Nope, not at all. You will need to purchase an "IR Blaster" to change chanels on the tuner if you want the PC to be able to change chanels for you. If you want to change chanels with the remote you won't need that. I am currently running Dish network reciever, Sage TV, a USB IR-Blaster and a Haupaugge WinTV PVR2 USB tuner(basically a USB PVR-250) and everything WORKS great. GP

I need a special reciever for the PC, like I would a normal television, right?

Nope, the sattelite reciever will have S-Video OUT. Your PVR-250 card should have S-Video IN. Plug it in along with audio left and right and your set. The IR Blaster is only if you want to be able to change chanels on the Sat reciever via PC/or associated program.

Well, if the tuner ends up in my room, that'll be great Unfortunately, both the tuner and my real tv (only use the 250 for recording) are in the same room in the basement, and the only TV we're going to hook up is the big one - the tuner box for the satelite will likely be upstairs somewhere on one of the other TVs

move to the basement like any sane person would do

Or just get a long enough s-video cable and one of those FM remotes so you can control it from a distance

re-read the post - I *am* in the basement . The computer with the PVR250 and the one regular TV are both in my room. All the other TVs in the house are upstairs though - so the box containing the tuner is likely to stay up there.

Set up a Media Center PC by the TV with the sat receiver and buy a Media Center Extender for your PVR 250 (Expensive I know, but DAMN AWESOME).

Actually, if you can afford it buy XP Media Center Edition for your PC and a Media Center Extender for the TV (Or XBOX MC Extender which is WAY cheaper). The PVR250 is one of the few supported tuners so it's a shame that you aren't already taking advantage of this (IF you aren't). Your parents will be blown away! It's just like TiVO: Everyone who tries it will NOT go back. Simple, intuitive, & easy. They'll probably even fund a second PVR-250 and sat receiver so that they can watch at the same time and schedule more recordings.

Tell your parents to get the dual-tuner receiver and run the second tuner down to the basement. Hey, it's "free installation" so take advantage of it while they are still a first-time customer!

Or better yet, have the receiver installed in the basement and the second tuner run throughout the rest of the house. Second tuner's output is modulated so you can use a splitter. Also, second tuner uses RF remote.

Thanks, that'll help I was wondering if I could run a splitter after the signal comes out of the tuner.
