Is my rig running too hot?

I have the following rig in a non AC room that's typically reaching over 80F+. Coretemp shows at max load it's about 69C on a hot summer day. Since I use it regularly as my H264 encoder machine, I leave it on for like 24hours to encode all the movies I wanted to encode. So I wonder at a near 70C coretemp reading during the summer, is this rig going to survive?

E2160@2.7Ghz using Vendetta 2
4GB ballistix 1000
2x500GB HD
P182 case
a low end 6200LE card for video
IP35-E board
500W Enhance 5150GH

pretty much it's only job now is to encode H264 and serve up some files when I need them. I'm wondering if I run it at this temp, will it survive the summer? As for cooling, I had a Tuniq 120 on it and the temp was the same. Then I got this V2 hoping to lower the temp somewhat but since the ambient is so high all the time in that room, this switch doesn't seem to do much.

Well, right now in my office, the temperature is 32C. My temps are (as i'm typing this): CPU - 42C, CPU(Core#1) - 54C, CPU(Core#2) - 51C, HDD (WD 640 GB) - 36C. These temps were taken using Everest Ultimate.
The rig consists of:

E6300 @ 2.45Ghz w/Xigmatek HD-S1283
2GB Corsair XMS2 DDR2-800
WD 640GB HD
VisionTek HD4850
DFI LanParty UT P35-T2R
Corsair HX520

What is the distance to TJunctionMax shown in CoreTemp. (Check the options to change to this setting.)

I've run my E2140s @ 3.2Ghz at up to 9C from TjunctionMax, and haven't had any issues with them. I would worry more about the HD temps than anything else.

With both coretemp/realtemp, I get 30-32 distance to TJ max. What's a safe distance for a E2xxx L2 stepping chip to survive?

Edit: Just googled, most people say 30-40 distance is alright. Larry? Did you say 9C distance to TJ max remain? or you mean 29C? at 9C That I'm sure will kill the chip!

Nope, I really meant only 9C to TJMAx. And the chips are fine still, as I expect they should be. I haven't exceeded any of Intel's thermal specs. (But I'm right on the edge)

seems pretty hot. maybe ease off the overclocking a little bit? even with a vendetta 2 though that seems really hot. might want to try reseating the cooler with a better layer of thermal grease

Nyker96,

We have very similar rigs (P180, E2160 @ 3.0, 4GB Ram, IP35-e) and yesterday I just installed the Vendetta 2 to replace the stock intel cooler. Initially I was getting higher temps than the stock cooler and I knew something had to be wrong. I am using the push pins that came with the Vedetta 2, they were difficult to seat, but eventually I got them in right. It did take a lot of force and I can see it bending the motherboard. I may look into getting the bolt thru kit later, but with the heatsink properly mounted and current ambient temps in my room (83F) after 26 minutes of Orthos my CPU temps never exceded 59c.

@VirtualLarry, Larry What type of ambient you have? I mean AC room etc? I still think 9 to TJMax is on the edge.

@faxon yes I'm planning to do that, when I took that Tuniq 120 out I didn't take the m.b. out just did a ad hoc install of the V2 with a bolt-thru kit. I think I might have to do a full blown reseat now. Actually I'm thinking to get a E5200/E7200s if the keep going like this.

@johnnycasaba, yes we seem to have EXACT the same ambient (80+) and setup. BTW what voltage to have your E2160 on? mine is 1.325 for the 2.7. I think your temp is definitely doing better than mine so it must be my V2 not seated correctly. I did get a bolt-thru for the V2 but when I seat it the first time I did a bad job, just fiddle it on and put very little TIM on it. Anyhow I will reseat it probably soon if the temp keep going like this.

mine is only 1.325 for 2.7 and about 1.4 for 3 as well, I'm pretty sure now that my seating of the V2 is the problem. Oh BTW if you getting the bolt-thru kit get the sidewinder one, $2 cheaper than TR brand but exactly the same:

hey thanks for the temp info, helped me figure out what to do next with this.

My ambients at those temps were around 90F. With the AC on, I get to around 83-85C using CoreTemp 0.96, which is 15-17C away from TJMax. Still warm, but it happily crunches DC and doesn't complain one bit.

@VirtualLarry thanks for the info, I still think even 15 from TJM is too hot for this processor. But if that's working fine for you, I can't argue with this result. Out of curiosity, Larry which HSF setup are you using with this CPU?

@johnnycasaba just checked this link you gave above, I read the screen shots, the guy in the forum got it wrong it's not 10C difference but 1C difference, the shots shows adding YateLoon gains you 1C, then adding the FX10 backplates adds another 1C to Distance to TJM. This is probably correct that you can tighten the hold by filing off 2-3mm from the bolt-thru kit. But I think I'll just do that by adding couple of washers into the srpings, that boosts tensions a bit. Thanks for the link though, good to know.
