Is my router dying?

I am having to reboot my router about once a day now to get internet connectivity at all. What happens is I'll boot up, and will have no internet connection (tray icon has yellow ! in it). The nice tech support lady at AT&T tells me I have 1) power down the system, the DSL modem, and the router (4 yr. old Linksys WRT54G V2), 2) disconnect the Cat5 from the router, wait a minute or so, reconnect it, 3) power up the router, wait for diags to finish, 4) power up the modem, wait for DSL light to stop blinking, 5) then power up the system. Whew! Everytime I do this, it works, but it is becoming a daily hassle. So, I am thinking now is the time to move up to a dual band a/b/g/n model.

Does this sound like a dying router? It's my first, so I have no experience with any other equipment. TIA.

Are you running stock firmware?

Nope. DD-WRT (not sure what version, but several years old) with the power turned up about 15%. When I made this setting, I remember reading somewhere that running it at higher power output can lead to premature router death. I did it in hopes of boosting the signal for other wireless users in the house.

OK, I would try re-flashing the firmware. I've had a similar issue on my WRT54GL where a re-flash fixed it.

OK, worth try. I may go ahead with a new unit anyway, re-flash this one and perhaps put to use on the other sided of the house. Thanks.

I'd also suspect a dying router. Had similar symptoms but they went away after replacing the router.
