Is my winchester 3500+ running too hot?

I just bought the following CPU/motherboard combo from Monarch Computers:

Shin-Etsu G675 Thermal Grease
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum official V1.4bios
Athlon 64 3500 90nm at 220x11, 1.4Vcore (MBM5 reports 1.36V)
Thermaltake AMD K8 Venus 7+

The whole package came assembled so I just installed it into my case. Given their reputation, I figured they should have done the installation properly. The rest of the components are:

PDP PC3200-XBL (TCCD based) 2x512 memory from newegg
leadtek nvidia 6800GT AGP at stock speed (350/1000)
an older hauppauge bt878 based tv tuner card
Creative labs soundblaster live gamer

The setup runs well and very stable, and CPUID-Z shows it as a 90nm CPU. However I am concerned about the CPU temp according to MBM5. It's 40-45C idle, 55-58C in prime95. The case temperature is always around 40C and I leave the cover off. The articles on the web, with the exception of xbitlabs, all seem to place the temp of 90nm winchesters lower than that

So what could be going on? Should I upgrade my cooling? or maybe wrong reading from the motherboard? or could it something weird with the CPU?

Finally, the speed of the fan currently seem to change according to the case temp and not the cpu temp. Is this normal?

that is what mine runs at too. Looks good. Should be fine...... Don't stress. I even have a xp-90

That's rather warm.

I have an A64 3000+ Winchester OC'd to 2.2ghz, which is the same as your 3500+ I idle around 29C and load around 44C. Anything under 60C is ok, but I'd make sure airflow through your case is the best it can be.

I will say that my ambient air temperature is around 66 degrees farenheit, and I did replace the stock fans in my Cooler Master Centurion with high performance, high CFM fans from Silverstone....so my ventilation may be better than most.

I have 31C case, 43C CPU (full load) with a Winchester 3000+ @ 2.6GHz (1.55V) and Zalman CNPS 7000A with the fan turned down a bit.

That's pretty good MDE. My 3500+@2.64ghz is about 37C idle, and 52C load on a XP90 with a 92mm tornado fan running at half power. How did you apply your thermal paste?

Spread a little on the heatsink base then a dab on the center of the CPU's heatspreader.
