Is NE1 else finding it hard to get excited over computer hardware these days?

Man, a year ago it was fun as hell to look at the hardware industry. Intel and AMD were duking it out, 3dfx and NVidia, ATi was just around the corner with the Radeon and the Duron was close by. New motherboard releases were me with great joy and equally as well with CPU's.

But now, it just seems as though everything is just ho-hum. "Just another motherboard," DDR SDRAM that doesn't live up to the hype, or NVidia $500 video card. I dunno, it just ain't the same anymore.

new 3d cards/technology doesn't excite me too much either...
it's all old news, just getting faster..and all the "new" features have been around for years in professional graphics cards...

new cool things are Hyperdata transport technology, USB 2.0, microdrives, DD CD-R from sony, and some sound cards are coming out w/ cool features...most are 5.1 now, some coming out /w 5.1 plus dedicated headphone jacks, breakout boxes, etc etc...

i don't get excited about the components as i do the gadgets that make use of them...my desktop is cluttered w/ gamepads, headphones, mp3 player, etc...
basically,i'm more into the aesthetics of my comp now...

some cool stuff in digital video editing is out/coming out now too

Im sick of seeing all the games on the market at the moment that just arent pushing the envelope of "immersion in the game"
Flight sims - Im still playing Falcon4 as its so much better than the rest, but it still makes me sick watching the trailer when u start the game and watch the pre-rendered movie of the sim in action. When games etc get as good as that then i might sit up, instead of slouching with my laptop reading this forum
Is this Hardware related? hmmm?

I know what you mean. Tribes is two and half years old and I STILL play it more than anything else b/c of the gameplay and the fun I have with it. Tribes 2 should be on my doorstep today so that may change ;D

i agree w/ the software....

the half-life engine is like 3 years old and CS still looks better than a lot of the newer games coming out...and the gameplay is damn fun..

i just bought metal gear solid for $30CDN the other day, simply because the game is fun..the graphics are nothing stellar, they're decent, but i must say, i've wasted hours on it so far...

You're right, it seems as though there aren't as many up and coming products to wet myself about. I'm still finding a way though, and I'm blaming it on the Celeron 333@450 that I'm using right now. I don't even have last year's goods, so this year's looks amazing to me.

yeah, on the hardware front the things are kinda stalled, what's the point having a real fast computer if there's no software(games!) that can use hardware to it's fullest extend?

I was wondering what happened to the game industry? seems like it's in a slump. Nothing really revolutionary , most of them just eye candy. (well, there's a few here and there, but generally speaking).

A lot of times you play the new game some, and still revert back to your old trustworthy games. I like flightsims, I like open ended resource management games, and I like turn based strategy games...

Part of it is expecting too much. When AMD "one upped" Intel with the first 1 GHz processor, that was exciting! However, nobody could get their hands on Intel's chip and even AMD's wasn't widely available for a while. Then they kept up the marketing hype which made things feel more exciting but much of it was smoke and mirrors.

And like some have said the software side has been rather dreary for a long time now. Office XP? I'm mellow to that. Win XP? Kinda exciting but not about the hardware locking and possible forced rental. Games? The "new experience" games are down to a trickle...Black and White is a good example but few developers take risks these days.

But fear not things will pickup again.

My excitement died with 3dfx. I was a V1/V2 owner, found the V3 somewhat disappointing, but thought they really had something there with the Voodoo5 and was actually looking forward to the V5 6000.

The GeForce cards don't do anything for me. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they are as fast and as capable as everyone says they are, but I always found 3dfx cards to be more interesting for some reason.

I will have to disagree with the majority on this one. i am really excited about receiving my MSI K7T266 Pro-R and 512MB Crucial PC2100 tomorrow.

In addition the "new" price of the GF3 looks very interesting.

DDR here I come !
