Is Newegg shipping the E6400 with the L2 stepping (SL9T9)?

I tried asking them directly, but the rep couldn't tell me what revision they were shipping.

Can anyone who has purchased a Core 2 Duo E6400 from Newegg.com recently (within the past few weeks or so) tell me whether it was the newer L2 stepping (SL9T9) or the older B2 stepping (SL9S9)?

I really want the L2 stepping because of the lower power consumption (12 W idle). More info here: http://www.behardware.com/news/8499/less-power-greedy-core-2-duo.html

Thanks.

I ordered on 2/5 and received a B2 (L628Bxxx, packed 12/05/2006, 3.2GHz at default voltage, baby!). That article is over 2 months old and still no sigh of the L2.

BTW, people say that L628 means that the chip was fabbed in week 28 of 06. It seems that most chips are marked L627...L628, so are they saying that Intel made most of the chips in a 2 week period in the middle of last year? I really doubt it.

when i bought an e4300 it was l643 or something oem.

the week is the week that the die was made, not when the die was packaged / tested etc . so it probably is close to accurate.

Well, that may be their form of a Julian date code, though normally Julian date coding uses four digits ... first digit is the year, followed by 3 digits equating to the day of the year, e.g. Feb. 19, 2007 would be 7050.
They might just be using the year, plus weeks instead of days.

Intel uses "work weeks" as date codes. So 01 is the first week of the year. 32 is the first week of August this year.

That said, the idea that L628 is "week 28 of 2006" doesn't look right. I think that's just a coincidence.

Don't know if you know this but if you can wait until April it will be well worth it, the 6400 is turning into the E6420 will get 2 more MB of cache and gets a price drop to $183 as well...

Well that price drop will not happen initially after the release. It's just like how 4300 is supposed to be $133 but everybody's selling them for 180. There's got to be at least 2 month before the price settles down...

To follow up my own thread:

On 2/27 I placed an order for an E6400 after seeing a customer review where someone claimed they received an L2 stepping E6400 on 2/21. I figured if that person received theirs on 2/21, then surely by 2/27 the old stock must have been long gone. Well, guess what, the package arrived today, but it's the old stepping - SL9S9! Unbelievably frustrating. I guess I'm going to have to RMA it and wait at least another week before I can build the machine. Sigh.

What happens if you get an L2 and it's a poor overclocker? From what I can see, the L2 will only save more power than a B2 if there is absolutely no load on the CPU, which may well be a very small part of the time.

Fuzzy im pretty sure that is not right, they never guaranteed you would get that specific processor, you just wanted it, like I want my bed to be floating in the morning, this is why processor prices are up, idiots like you.

Actually no, the E4300 is supposed to be 163USD now, replacing the Pentium D 945 163USD processor.

In April 22nd the E4400 will be released at 133USD with the E4300 dropping to 113USD.

The last 5-10 Core2's i've built has been the 'T' stepping. But I do not know what newegg is shipping. Sorry

I actually don't plan to overclock (gasp!). No really, aren't Core 2 Duos fast enough as it is?

My CPU actually does sit idle most of the time; I don't play games 24/7.

And it's not just about saving power; a lower wattage CPU produces less heat, thus requiring less fan power to cool, resulting in a quieter PC.

A computer that is off saves even more money and is even quieter.

The L2 is actually less desirable as it is the Allendale core and not the Conroe. Which probably means little to you since you don't want to overclock but I still don't see why getting one stepping over another is that big of a deal. The B2 E6400's run pretty darn cool anyway.

I just got my E6400 from Newegg a few days ago. I did not check the stepping, but cpu-z identifies the proc as an L2 revision?

I got my E6400 today . . . BX80557E6400SL9T9.

So is the L2 stepping a good one for OC'ing, or not? I was hoping to get at least 3.2 . . .

Update - I've got 3.2 stable, my temps are a little high. I'm waiting on a better heatsink to see if I can push it any further.
