Is NOLF2 worth buying?

NOLF2 came out just in time for my grandson's 14th birthday so I picked it up for him. He loved NOLF1 and he says 2 is even better.

All the reviews are positive. Many reviews compare NOLF2 to System Shock, Thief and Dues Ex so it must be good. I finally bought it though it'll be a while before I induldge.

Hey, apoppin, how's that computer problem now? Get it resolved?

Dang, the first one WAS long. Especially with the bonus mission of the Game of the Year pack.

If you decide to get NOLF 1, get the Game of the Year edition. Extra mission, soundtrack, and solution manual (which is nice more to find all the secrets than the actual solution - the game is relatively easy).

Just finished it after a few days of playing, pretty easy. It was good but has little replay value...

Well, I am halfway through Thief II (now THAT'S a game - I remember almost being finished with a level and then realizing you have to REMEMBER the exact location where you found one key in seven top put it back).

But I digress . . . my (Soyo-approved) solution to the AGP card's looseness in the TISU MB is to remove the AGP screw and JAM the card in as hard as possible and don't bump the computer. (But it works!)

Anyway, NOLF2's biggest shortcoming is it's short length.

Thief 2 rocked! Moss arrows, flash bombs, clubbing guards from behind....ah can't wait for Thief 3. And on today's hardware you should be able to run at 1600x1200 without any hit at all.

Just started NOLF 2 today. Nothing new yet -- the demo had the same levels I've played so far. Lithtech sure has come a long way. The water effects are good but Morrowind's are even better. Still really good, though.

NOLF 2 should hold us until the Real Deal ships in 1H 2003....Dues Ex 2.

Hmm . . . Dues Ex 2 ????

Sounds like an Alimony Payment Game (to the ex).

I can't wait.

I'm really enjoying NOLF 2 (had it for a few weeks now, haven't had time to play it much). Great voice acting, great characters, and I really like the skill system and the body search mechanic. I'll probably play through at least once more on a harder difficulty, mainly because I want to get a little better at fps games, and also because the AI is very adaptive and unscripted, so playing through with a different style really creates a different experience.

I don't think there is a lot of replay value in the game (playing it all over again even at a higher skill level - but then some people watch movies over-and-over).

Fortunately, when you have completed the game, it unlocks every level so that you can go back and play whatever level you especially liked (the scene with the tricycle comes to my mind).

Also the multiplayer levels (where you get to rescue Cate) are open as a single player experience . . .

First, greetings to JB and apoppin. Yes, I still lurk around here now and then.

Second, I've only played through Siberia, but so far NOLF2 is better than NOLF1, in my opinion...
BUT - If you haven't played NOLF1, or many shooters in general, I'd recommend playing NOLF1 first for the following reasons:

1. It's a damn good game (I can hear JB's bile rising...).

2. It's got a lot simpler (and somewhat less satisfying) game mechanics, i.e. no skill level management, less stealth, more linear game play etc.

3. It's more of a straight-up shooter and less of an RPG-Shooter hybrid (this is more like a corollary to item 2 above).

The downers in NOLF1 are GROTESQUELY long cut scenes and so-so graphics (but still pretty).

The downers in NOLF2 are:

1. GROTESQUELY long load times. I can forgive taking a minute to load a NEW level, but a "Quick Load" within the SAME LEVEL should not make me want to run out and buy a 15,000 RPM SCSI RAID array just to get the level back up in less than a minute. Uh uh. No way.

2. The AI can be a little too clairvoyant at times, causing frequent death, which causes me to hit F9, which leads to Item 1 above...

3. The balance between stealth/search and AI aggression can be a little frustrating. I often got whacked while searching in a dark room where I was theoretically concealed. This was due to Item 2 above which leads to Item 1 above...

4. It's a bit of a resource hog. I can run any Quake III based game at 1600x1200 with full detail, trilinear filtering, etc. etc., but I had to step all the way back to 1024x768 with this one. And I still get stutter every now and then. This is with a P4 1.6A @ 2560 and a GF4 4600. But I've heard reports of smooth going on slower systems, so maybe it's just something about my rig.

5. Enemy respawning. Remember SS2 where there were theoretically something like 40 crew members on the Von Braun, but by the end of the game you had probably killed 20 times that many "Hybrids"? Same thing with Russian Soldiers here. Playing on "Easy"seems to control this somewhat, but "Easy" ain't everyone's style.

6. I miss the NOLF1 equipment load-out screen (or maybe I'm just not to the point where you get it yet). The one glaring omission that keeps this game from being a true SS2/Deus Ex RPG/FPS hybrid is inventory management. This can be a drag sometimes, but a Soldier of Fortune-style "load-out at the start of the mission" option at least would be nice.

This is mostly nit picking (except the buzz-killing level load times). Basically play them both and you'll have a damn fine time. Then play Thief 1 and 2, SS2, and Deus Ex if you haven't already.

I'd get Nolf1 first and play through that.

After, try out Nolf2.

But Nolf2 is worth it.

I've been watching my bro play it(couldn't get it to run on my Voodoo5) and I agree with KillerApe, the Load times are ridiculous! I could see some not playing it for that reason alone.

You're a funny guy Mr. Nitpicker.

Killer Ape is in da house! Long time no see (you post). I rated NOLF 1 a solid 3.5 star game. Didn't care for the interface design, long cutscenes and very linear gameplay. I haven't completed NOLF 2 so I can't rate it yet.

I haven't experienced overly long load times and it runs well at 1280x960 with all options cranked up. Perhaps I haven't hit a taxing level yet?

I'm running under 9x which may make a difference. I discovered the hard way NOLF 1 and XP simply did not get along. The performance was bad and I had numerous sound problems. So I dual boot to 9x to play NOLF 2. So far so good.

I'm glad to see you Killer Ape are still around.

As to long load times . . . I noticed quite the opposite - that it is rather quick (I got a new Maxtor HD so maybe that's why). Also running Win98SE (they're gonna have to pry that OS out of my cold dead hands) even though I also run Win2K (and even play with XP occasionally).

I'd say there must be something going on with your system and the game. I can run it at 1600x1200 with full detail nicely. I'm on an athlon xp 2000+ with a ti4400.

I find this game just as system heavy as either UT2003 or SOF2, but looking past that, I really like it and recommend it.

I usually liked to just pop them in the head with one shot of my pistol. Makes the ZZZZ's disappear. Especially the ones that gave me trouble.

You mean they need to be stunned to use the welder on them?

:Q

Maybe that's what took me so long to finish.

Currently on the "infiltrate the records building" chapter. Lithtech is doggin' a bit on this level which makes no sense since it's mostly an indoor area with small rooms...?

I'm not really enjoying the unlimited respawning of enemies. Undying had this as well. Maybe I just need to get used to it. Why can't I just blow the crap out of the alarm systems?
