Lets go with Occam's razor. The most likely scenario for your sister who was there for a summer is that she got upset that American food was not served more than once at a function where they tried a different food each week. She hyped how much everyone loved "American" food without realizing that pizza is not American and put a lot of butter on her potato and got snickered at.
There's nothing really wrong with any of that. Culture shock and cultural differences are to be expected. I have a hard time each time I switch living between the USA and Sweden.
