I'm intent on buying a video card in the coming weeks. I see around the forums that people are talking about the next set of Nvidia cards. Are there cards suppose to be superior? I was looking at a 9800 gtx since I dont use high resolution the Gx2 would really be worthless IMO. Whats the latest?

Whatever Nvidia is going to release is going to be one expensive, power hungry cards. Not even in the same class as G92.

Keep your options open and see what the 4850 and 4870 can do. Might be the better card in price bracket that isn't a nuclear reactor.

So you guys suggest waiting on purchase? I was going to purchase an overclocked BFG 9800 GTX from newegg tonight.

It really doesn't matter. The new cards will be priced according to the market. So the ones that are faster will also be more expensive.

If you play on a 30 inch monitor though, there really are no good cards right now.

So if you play at lower res I would buy now. If you play at higher res I would wait.

Well I play on a 22 inch monitor with a secondary 19 inch monitor. And at a resolution of 1680x 1050

It becomes a bad time when a product is about to be released at a similar price point that offers better performance. I think ati 4870 is the one to watch at the 9800 GTX price point. But than again, both BDG and EVGA are offering step-up programs.

There's never a "perfect" time. Good luck. BTW, 9800GTX would do quite well on that res..

If I were you I would go right now to newegg and buy their cheapest 8800GTS 512. I think it runs around $210. I dont think the 9800GTX provides enough performance boost to justify the extra 100 bucks. And that leaves you with more money to upgrade again in the future.

And also that card overclocks very well. Some say you can get 9800GTX performance by overclocking it. It also runs quieter and cooler than the 9800.

This is the card I'm refering to - http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16814127325

I'm looking at buying mid-June. If I buy a 9800 GTX, I'll buy eVGA so that I can step up to the GT2xx card. With a 90 days Step Up, thats three more months to save up another $200 to get the newest card. Its probably the safest bet, as we don't know what the GT cards will do yet.

even if the new Nvidia cards will be priced very high, there will be new/better AMD products in the moderate price range that could lower the prices of Nvidia and AMD products currently in that market. I would wait.

If money isn't an issue and/or your gaming resolution depends on it, then sure do the step-up. But a word of warning: EVGA and so on go based off of their MSRP prices. Rumors are that the next GTX280 can cost $600+! So if you buy a 9800GTX now for $300, be prepared to spend well more than $300 to step-up.

Also, FWIW, people have been rumoring that the 4870 can be +20-30% faster than the 9800GTX. Granted, those are rumors, and the card will be priced at $350, but either case, I'd wait the extra month because whether the new cards are better or not, the currently existing cards will go down in price and you'll win either way.
