why will AMD have to cut prices?

Skylake-X i predict will be so overpriced that AMD will still have the win in the performance / dollar aspect.

Obviously it depends on what they price the cheaper 6 core. I'm assuming the price will be low enough to force AMD to cut prices when you factor in that Skylake-X will widen the IPC and clock speed gap. It could be just something as simple as removing the 1700 and putting the 1700X in the 1700 price bracket.

I had to do an emergency MB/CPU replacement a few weeks ago, so I obviously went Kaby. Got the usual good bundle deal at Microcenter.

For the first time, however, I went with an i5 over an i7 to save some money. I realized I don't have many programs that use 8 threads, and of the ones I do the difference has proved to be minimal. My 7600K overclocks easily to 4600 by just upping the multiplier, which is good enough for my uses.

Anyway, the point is you should analyze your usage to see whether you really need that i7, either this generation or the next. If you don't, spend the money saved on some other component.

No reason to wait. It's not going to get any cheaper. That CPU still basically has no competition.

Not sure why you'd say that. The 7700K has definitely gone down in price recently. I saw a deal for one at $277 the other day. IIRC this CPU is supposed to sell for $350. And I doubt a 6 core coffee lake is going to increase its price.

August. As far as price goes, CFL should be a direct replacement for the 7700K/7600K.
I would be really surprised if Intel priced CFL the same as 7700K/7600K.

It would be great if they do and would probably represent the best value replacement Intel has ever done, outside of when they introduced Conroe.

Haven't you heard Daddy-o, it is 8 cores or bust these days.

Haha! I'm running a quad (w/ SMT) at 5GHz and I haven't found anything that this CPU can't handle. I literally am only interested in CFL because I like shiny new hardware, not because I have any actual need.

It would be the smart thing for Intel to do, though, given what else is going on in the industry. It'll inject a little excitement back into the Intel side of things, and fend off you-know-who.

Plus even a Coffeelake quad should clock a little better than Kabylake. I'm thinking there will be a 4c/8t k-class Coffeelake that will hit 5.0-5.2 GHz on air that will make people glad they didn't buy a 7700k. Especially since it'll probably launch at a lower price than what you would pay today for Kabylake.

I just recently built a new rig and went with a 7600K. I'm curious now about Coffeelake. Will it be same socket? And will it run on the 200 series chipset as well? Or will it require a whole new platform? If it does, then I may just go ahead and get a 7700K.

Still $350 on newegg. And that is with a sale that "ends in 4 days".

Does a bear poop in an outhouse? When was the last time intel went more than 2 generations without needlessly changing sockets?

I don't know, you tell me. My last CPU I had before this was a 3770K, and before that was a Q6600. But thanks for not being helpful.

Intel has changed socket H on only step "Architecture", previously "Tock". Coffee Lake uses current Skylake architecture, so if historical trends hold, Coffee Lake will use the current socket, H4 (LGA 1151).

About the argument that Intel has never supported an iteration of socket H for more than two generations: Intel also has never released three generations of the same architecture.

Motherboard manufacturers give updates to old chipsets for compatibility with new processors for same socket, although a glaring counter-example is Broadwell.

His questions were rhetorical meaning you can bet your bottom dollar that Coffee Lake will require a new motherboard. It was a helpful response, but you missed his humor-for-emphasis. It's all good.

If the i7700K sells for $350, then I would think Intel would charge at least $400 for a 6 core CFL.

If AMD weren't around with Ryzen, then they probably would have charged $500+ for 6 core CFL.

Intel might sell a 6c6T for $350 and the 6c12T for $400 and push the 4c8T down to $270ish.

It seems to me that the worry about 6700K v 7700K v Coffee Lake is inversely proportional to the age of your existing system. If I was using 5-year-old technology, I wouldn't have much in either hesitation or regrets for a 6700K or 7700K. It's nice to get the latest-greatest. And it's also nice to know you can replace a Skylake with a Kaby after a BIOS flash. So what's the hurry?

Roughly the same price structure. I hope.

It might be worth buying some RAM and then just sitting on your hands until August or so. Seems like RAM is still going up?

I would honestly wait on upgrading ANYTHING at this point. This is going to be a big year for Intel/AMD/Nvidia. AMD still has more CPUs (12C/24T and 16C/32T) coming out. Intel is rumored to be speeding up the release of coffee lake and the entire release is rumored to be getting a revamp. AMD is releasing Vega while Nvidia is speeding up the release of Volta. While it's true that hardware is obsolete the second your purchase it, don't rush into upgrading unless you need to.

Believe me, I'm still sitting on my Core i7 2600k and I'm itching to upgrade...but I'm waiting.

If you have an i5 or i7 from the past 5 years and don't really need to upgrade soon then wait for Coffee Lake. Or if you upgrade often you could get a 7700k now and swap it out later this year or the next, I guess.

Saying what you want to use it for would be helpful as well.

Outside of lowest end imo the most attractive cpu in Intel lineup is the 6800. Oc it to 4/4.1 and it stays within reasonable max load powerusage and can handle a very mix load perfectly fine. From productivity to games. It doesnt have any weak spots at all and does so without using 160w in typical max loads.
Its a underrated processor for the price.
If cl 6c does the same at 15% extra perf within the same tdp i hope the price gets even lower.
