Is now a good time to buy some stock?

So I have a little extra money to play with, I'm wondering if it would be worth it to buy some stock, technology in particular...

I was thinking about buying some AMD/ATI stock (it's dirt cheap right now, but the company is doing terrible...for now), or Nvidia, or Intel. Intel has been getting the best stock ratings, and the shares are reasonably cheap...

Or would I be better off just putting it in a savings account? With the recent fed rate cut all the "high return" accounts are down to like 3.5-4%.

Anyone with money or stock experience? I'm still relatively new to buying/selling stock- I dabbled in the stock market about 2-3 years ago with Nvidia and Motorola, but not with thousands of dollars...

No, I was able to get education credit for my $20,000 tuition med school this year. I got a $2000 credit for school, which knocked my tax obligation to $80 (I had ~$3K in tax witholdings). So Federal was ~$3K, and for state I got $1200.

So AMD probably wouldn't be a great idea right now? I was going to invest like $1000 or so, more if I did well...

If you considered purchasing AMD, you need to stay far, far away from investing in single stocks. Throw it in an index fund, and walk away.

I think the market is going to drop for a while longer, though I could be wrong. You could start learning about investing at least. I can tell you from my limited experience trading stocks that you can lose a lot of money quickly if you don't know what you're doing. I may stick with mutual funds.

Take the $4k and do a Roth IRA if you qualify. I would put it in one of the target retirement funds at Vanguard.

Let's see...we are teetering on the brink of a global recession. The fed has cut interest rates 1.25% within the past month. Inflation is sure to follow... NO.. Not a good time to invest in stocks. I sold all my stocks off about a month ago and I'm glad I did or I would have taken a beating. The safest place for that money right now is in some type of retirement fund, as has been mentioned, or in a high yield CD or savings account that can at least beat inflation. I think the market has a long way to go before it hits bottom, IMHO.

funny, the three stocks I'm look at right now is intc, nvda and aapl ... leaning towards intc and nvda though. If you're planning on keeping the stock for awhile, those companies look fairly good right now.

Buy some BRCD stocks. Second biggest to CISCO. I would stick that money in some index funds. I opened up a sharebuilder account. Bunch of ETFs.
