People overclock their video cards, their chips, and I've even heard of people overclocking their CD writers (like a bios hack or patch to go from 8x to 10x). Isn't that kinda a ricing-like behavior?? Modding your computer for minimal performance gain???

People who do it so they can get one extra frame per second in Quake 3 are pushing the limits of "useful" mods. But I think anything that has to do with paint, glass, neon lights, LEDs or stickers definetly counts as computer RICE.

<< Ricing doesn't mean increasing performance... >>

Exactly. Ricing is a lame attempt at making things look like they'd be faster. IE, "v-tec" stickers on cars that don't and can not have v-tec. Stupid ugly spoilers, etc. For computers, you can't really rice it out.. unless you put ugly stickers all over it or something.

"Rice" is not performace mods. It's asthetic mods in the absence of performance mods.

Examples:

Overclocking and adding only the fans you need to cool = no rice

Not overclocking, and adding way too many fans, a glass window, and neon lights on your old 486 = rice

Rice = all show, no go.

Many people on this forum have the wrong definition of "rice." Supras, NSXs, EVO, WRX are NOT rice. Honda Civic DX with 8 inch diameter exhaust, Type-R Sticker, 3 foot high spoiler, windshield nozzle lights, and blue turn signals IS rice.

I always thought those stickers made my computer go faster . Heh...the only sticker I have is an AMD Athlon bezel sticker. Represent!

Hmmm what about putting a P4 sticker on a Athlon XP, would that be ricing or dericing ?

no ocing is accually the more legit way to do it,

Turbo Button=Nos
OC'ing = Turbo charger and how ever many mhz you bumped the FSB = PSI

Hmm, rice-like behavior? I'll take good old American iron over that kinda stuff any day! Let's see, a 73 or 74 Dart, really warmed over 340, beefed 727 TorqueFlite, 8 3/4" Sure-Grip with 3.91s, Big-Block torsion bars up front with a 1 3/4" swaybar and at least a 7/8" sway bar out back. Looks like rice is on the grill! And I'll take my 1Ghz T-Bird to whatever speed I damn well can get it to!!!

Ricing is the act of modifying your car with not only no intention to gain performance, but also the chance at losing performance. Your car ricing to computer ricing analogy is WAY off base.

First, any overclocking that is actually increasing performance is the exact opposite of ricing. It is more like tuning your race car. Overclocking is also the most efficient way to spend your money 90% of the time. Second, I wouldn't even consider windows, fans, and other semi-useless mods to a case in the same category as ricing.

Here are things I would consider ricing:

Cutting blowholes into your case without putting functional fans in behind them (much like non-functioning hood scoops).
Excessive neon lights to the point at which you have to buy a bigger powersupply.
Fan placement that actually raises the heat of your PC by blowing the air into the wrong spots.
Placing stickers onto your PC with the sole purpose of making it look like a faster processor than it actually has.
Racing stripes on your PCB?

Things I would not consider ricing:
Windows: no matter how lame the window looks, it still serves the basic purpose of allowing you or others to look into your PC without having to remove the case cover. This is useful and handy.
Excessive fans: If the fans continue to cool down your PC, then they are serving a purpose. It is only a matter of noise here and if you can mind the noise then more power to you.
Overclocking: performance gains should never be confused for ricing, thats a complete oxymoron. Overclocking is all about pushing your current hardware to the extreme, much like professional racers have to push their cars to the extreme.

I'm too old to be in touch with the current generation of AzN ricers, but overclocking is more like Hot Roddin' for your comp than anything else. Ever read Hot Rod mag...

well last i checked rice lives in flooded fields called "paddies." and sticking your computer in a flooded field will void your warranty, as will overclocking, so yes, it is.

And the Celeron 300s and 366s are the small block Chevys of the PC world.
