Decide for yourself

Q.) Is Marijuana addictive? A.) Not everyone who uses marijuana becomes addicted, when a user begins to seek out and take the drug compulsively, that person is said to be dependent on the drug or addicted to it. In 1995, 165,000 people entering drug treatment programs reported marijuana as their primary drug of abuse, showing they needed help to stop using. Some heavy users of marijuana show signs of dependence because when they do not use the drug, they develop withdrawal symptoms. Some subjects in an experiment on marijuana withdrawal had symptoms, such as restlessness, loss of appetite, trouble with sleeping, weight loss, and shaky hands. According to one study, marijuana use by teenagers who have prior serious antisocial problems can quickly lead to dependence on the drug. That study also found that, for troubled teenagers using tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana, progression from their first use of marijuana to regular use was about as rapid as their progression to regular tobacco use, and more rapid than the progression to regular use of alcohol.

Is it physically addicting, like for instance Tobacco, No.
Is it something people often get a "mental dependancy" for, Yes

That being said, there are those who use it casually and/or with moderation, who still maintain responsible and productive lives....
Then there are those whose life revolves around it. Those people are pretty much useless.

i used to be a heavy smoker then just stopped cus i felt like it was something you only do in your teen years when ur young and naive. i never felt a dependance or any withdrawl symptoms. just stopped and never looked back but my brother still does it everyday and his friends and i know they just do it for the feeling and they have stopped before for like a week or so but they are so old and still smoke it..........makes me feel kinda sad for them so for me i say no that there is no PHYSICAL dependance just a mental dependance to the feeling that it gives you

Anything can be adicting. If you can't control something you do, you've got a problem no matter what it is.

some peopel seem to respond to it addictively. I know people who had trouble functioning normally without getting high frequently. Some people just get off it, decide one day to stop (one friend of mine claimed it killed his brain cells ). Some seem to need to keep going back though.

i actually talked about legalizing marijuana for one of my speeches in my speech class.

most ppl smoke it for fun and to get high, just like ppl drinking to get drunk, not because the body is craving for it.

Rather it's chemically addictive, or the results are physiologically addictive, the results are the same. People who do it tend to do it more, or want to do it more. I think it has a lot to do with the individual though, as to how well they resist addiction to anything. Same as alcohol or anything else. I don't say that it has the withdrawl effects of other addictions mind you, merely that those that use it tend to use it more, often to their extreme detriment.

"Honey, I know how to end our argument once and for all.."
"Well what is it?"
"I am going to look on the internet"
"What do you mean? Are you going to the US Psychology Board home page to look for case studies? Or perhaps the New England Journal of Medicine archives?"
"Nope. I am going to post an informal poll on a techie message board"

There is quite a bit of scientific research that has been done on cannabis and addicition:

Of note is that there is experimental evidence for the following:

There is very good evidence (based on observation as well as carefully controlled studies) for a definite physical withdrawral syndrome seen in cannabis users (adults and teenagers) who suddenly stop its use - the most important symptoms are an attention-deficit type syndrome, impaired judgement, restlessness, weight loss, and insomnia.

There is a definite development of 'tolerance' in people (and also experimental animals) who use cannabis regularly.
In experimental animals there are definite physical and biochemical changes associated with this tolerance, as well as a specific physical withdrawral syndrome

There is very good anatomical evidence that cannabis affects the 'addicition centre' of the brain in similar ways to tobacco, and other addictive drugs.

A lot of the confusion comes from the old belief that cannabis could not be a physically addictive drug due to its chemcial nature. The action of cannabis was poorly understood, new research which has revealed the biochemical pathways it affects has demonstrated that there is a specific mechanism which could explain much of its dependency.

right, to add a little more to it, SOME people are prone to addiction. the key is to shift their addiction to dependence on something else, like attending regular meetings.... lol.

Yes, of course it is.

But in vastly different ways than other things, particularly other drugs.

Pot is not physically addictive. This is a fact.

It can be psychologically addictive though.

Yes.

those that say no are simply uniformed/ignorant.
Were you addicted to marijuana?
Just realize that everyone is different.

I'm addicted. It's not a big deal, though. It's not like I'd curl up into a ball and quiver for a day if I quit.

There are certinly withdrawl symptoms associated with quitting; I've done it twice before.. I'm sure I'll do it again. For me, it's mostly just a day or so of nausea.

And, this also depends on the circumstances... The first time I quit, I had to.. and it wasn't fun. The second time.. It's just what was happening, and I didn't even notice it.

I liken it to being addicted to foods, because it's so subtle that most people don't realize it.. but man, what happens when you try and go on "a diet"? The stereotype is to drastically change your diet. What happens? You moan and groan.

food withdrawls can be a bitch... lol

Anything you like can be "addictive" to a point (favorite foods are a great example of this). However, pot is not addictive in the clinical sense.

I contend that you can be "clinically" addicted to anything... washing your hands, masturbating, ice cream, valium, marijuana, driving fast, alcohol....

Where's the line?

Those aren't clinical addictions (with the exceptions of valium and alcohol). Those are cases of OCD.
