Heck you don't even need to do a mod chip on it. Just snag a bigger hard drive from the Egg and toss Linux on there and you've got roms, and video and powerful music and better web browsing right there.

I'm not sure quite yet, but I do know that it is possible to get Fedora Core 5 to run on it. The PS3 itself is running a linux kernel for it's OS, and has an option to format the hard drive that is installed in it to create partitions for other bootable OSes. I haven't really looked into it seriously yet since I only have a 20gb one. After I get my christmas bonus I'm probably gonna plunk down for a 120gb HDD and start the tomfoolery with my PS3 and linux.

Sitting on what store shelves? They seem to be selling as fast they're shipped to stores. Availability on eBay does not indicate lack of demand. I think demand will wane somewhat into the new year, but it hasn't happened yet.

And I assume you mean $500, right?

Friends of mine that braved WalMart a few days ago have seen a couple 60gb ones sitting on the shelves.

While we're citing anecdotal evidence, my cousin works in a Best Buy in Toledo. I was talking to him about this last night. They received 40 Wii's and 30 PS3's over the weekend and sold all of them within a day.

I just do not see any reason to buy a PS3 over a 360 right now. Maybe in a year. But right now only fanboys (or MS haters) would do so. It just does not make any sense at all.

I guess hardcore gamers who MUST have each system even if they do not play it could be grouped in there as well.

GT5, MGS, FF, Tekken will make me get it when decent games come out. The game are p!ss poor at the moment...

ps3 seems like an incomplete thing to me. eg i can't belive you have to connect the wireless controllers to sync. i just got a xbox yesterday (micro center sent my brother a free usb coupon and when he he got there to pick it up he kind heartedly got me a xbox 360 too ) and its got nothing like that. i love tat yu can turn console on and off from the controller.

its these small things and the large price tag tat are stopping the ps3

$600 is a bargain for a Blu-Ray drive alone right now, but I don't think the Blu-Ray drive is any more useful than a $30 DVD-ROM with regard to running Linux on a PS3. One of the main benefits of running Linux is the ability to run emulators of past systems. Emulators on PCs are nice and all, but anyone would rather play console games on a console system with a console controller.

I think the amount of memory in the PS3 will be a limiting factor - it has the same amount as the Xbox 360.

They are selling all the ones they build, has a huge library of PS1 and PS2 games, has BluRay (which will win the format war thanks to the PS3 and Sony Pictures as soon as they can get the yields up and the costs down), and of course, the sony marketing machine that will have sheep buying it left and right. The only people that think it will fail are the fanboys on the internet that sit around playing their Wiis while bashing Sony.

(Note, the only video game console I own is the first Xbox and I have no plans for buying any other console, heck I have not played it in a year)

I manage a Gamestop in a upper middle-class area. We once got 6 60 gigs at 10am and did not sell the first one until 2pm. I did not sell the last one until 9pm. And this is after I told two stores near me I had them in case someone asked.

If I had Wii's, I could have sold a hundred in 4 hours, no problem.
