Is Ps3 Doomed?

As i said in a different thread, the PS3 will end up owning every other console. Why? Because it has a much greater longevity then every other system.

Most reports on the PS3 say that while it currently has horrible game support, that the current games use only half the things potential. What does that mean? The PS3 will still be able to compete with next gen consoles from Nintendo and Microsoft without having to come out with a PS4.

Now, the jury's out on whether that's a smart move for Sony (increasing length of product cycles has historically been a bad thing), but its a good thing for you and me.

good games are ocming out next year.
i have had 2 PS3's one i took back to Fry'sthe other i am going to take back to Costco.
a friend of mine opened his and we played for a month but got bored and sold it at cost.
the 360 is fun, has ,ore games, and has a better controller. so for now it will do for us to play on

Well, there are more uses that he'll discover soon enough.. Mod chips and stuff will let the PS3 TRUELY become the center of Home entertainment ,, with Divx and stuff. It is certainly more than capable of HD, unlike other consoles which are buggy. and for what u get , 600 is justifiable if USED to full potential..

If people buy PS3s for mod chips and for anything else other than PS3 games or Blu-Ray, that's a huge loss for Sony. Every PS3 is sold at a $200+ loss. They only make money off of game sales and Blu-Ray right now.

I think the ps3 is a good machine that is not overpriced, and I know Sony can keep its head above the water long enough to sell enough ps3's to keep it going.

If the ps3 fails, I dont think it will be the ps3's fault, but just sony in general making horrible commercials and constantly forcing people to use their stupid formats, while have the quality of their products fall down (or perhaps not improve enough) to the level of other companies like Samsung.

10 years ago, Sony was the brand for tv's and electronics, if it wasnt a sony it wasnt the best. Now, I'll buy a samsung over a sony for both picture quality and price.

We could be witnessing a giant falling with sony.

Sitting on what store shelves? They seem to be selling as fast they're shipped to stores. Availability on eBay does not indicate lack of demand. I think demand will wane somewhat into the new year, but it hasn't happened yet.

Both Walmart and target here had 3-5 units per store on the shelves yesterday (while I was out trying to snag a wii) I've got a 360, probably going to skip on the ps3 because of cost and just grab a wii, I think that most of the good games are going to be cross platform between 360 and ps3. I also don't want to support Blu-ray and another 10 years of mpeg2. Regarding the OP: Keep one PS3, if you've already opened it, you might as well, like I said I think most of the big games will run on both 360 and ps3, sell the other for whatever you can get (the sooner the better obviously)

We'll probably end up with the 360 and ps3 about even with each other. I think the Wii will expand the market and gain much of this new market share.

I disagree that Sony will win the format war. It certainly helps that they have their own studio to back the format, and while it isn't as much of a technical innovation as hd-dvd (blu-ray has higher capacity, but it wastes it on bloated mpeg2) many large studios are backing hd-dvd

Many of the newer Blu-ray titles are in VC1 or MPEG4. The percentage of non-MPEG2 titles has been increasing over the past 3 months. Nearly all of Warner's HD-DVD and Blu-ray new releases are identical encodes in VC1, for example.

You say it isn't as technically advanced as HD DVD, but then go on to say offers higher capacity. Can you expand on your theory? They support virtually the same video and audio codecs and Blu-ray has 66% more capacity per layer.

The only studio that hasn't offered up support for Blu-ray is Universal.

Meanwhile, if you want Fox, Disney, Sony, or MGM titles, good luck finding them on HD DVD.

I saw 3 people in line at Best Buy in Dundas Square(the place where that guy smashed his PS3) who were returning their PS3's, and seeing if they could get a Xbox 360 or a Wii.

Who said you can't power on the PS3 from an untethered controller? Works fine for me. The USB is only connected when the controller needs a charge.

I don't think there is any convincing arguement for the Playstation 3 to "win" at this point. The best you can argue for is that it'll compete, because as much games are promised now if they aren't actually out during Christmas time then they are irrelevant. People buy what has games NOW, not games that come out in a year.

The Wii made a strong showing and Xbox 360 is definately in the lead now. It was the first one released and it obviously isn't going the way of the Dreamcast so that leaves only one other example, the Playstation 2. Xbox came out a year later and couldn't catch up.

Then you have the price tag which reminds me of the 3DO. Most people will not pay that much for a console.

I don't own any game consoles but am always interested in business competitions. I've been predicting the Sony PS3 will fail, mostly due to its late launch and price, for a few months now. All evidence is pointing in that direction at this point.

I think you do need to connect it when installing an update, but we haven't had to any other times.

You'd think Sony would learn after their Betamax vs. VHS failure back in the 80s. Here they are again with their Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD.

$400 PS3 = doable, but $600 is just asking way too much, especially when Blu-ray functionality comprises 1/3 of the system costs.

The only way PS3 is going to dominate is if something the equivalent of WoW is made for the PS3.

there was no point in buying the xbox 360 in the first year it came out and there is no point in buying the ps3 for the first year it will be out. I still wouldnt get a 360 cause madden isnt that much worse on the regular xbox and the rest of the games are only cool for the eye candy, not the replayability. My computer competes with any eye candy on the consoles so wtf is the point?

Around the time the PS3 picks up steam will be the time Halo 3 comes out. Not sure if that means anything or not but surely it will do nothing but help 360 sales.

Three silly statements in a row, and the first two contradict each other! The graphics on ridge racer are better than any xbox 360 game I've seen, proving that the PS3 can easily output amazing graphics.

And I don't know about Ebgames.com, but there are a ton of potentially great games coming for the PS3 this spring.

No, unless you're able to return it to the store or give it to a friend as a gift. You won't be getting your money back, I guarantee it. Taxes and shipping alone will kill you, in addition to ebay and paypal fees. It'll be a net loss.
