Perchance, tell me what mental health and illness are?

Do they even have a firm definition?

It is still obvious from your posts that you do not wish to hear or consider other's opinions but came in here to promote wacky ideas of your own. That's trolling.

I was ready to give you the benefit of the doubt for some of your other threads, but now I know you are really not very bright.

Mental health is when you are happy and don't bother anyone. Mental illness is when you can't be happy and/or can't stop bothering other people.

I don't believe that. It's something the medical profession say to look PC.

Anything that is an "illness" is something not conforming to social norms. Yeah, so goths in school were ill, and yeah holding an opinion/different world view made them ill.

Given the number of people here that probably see a psychiatrist (MD), psychologist (often doctorate-holding), or therapist (everything else)...I'm gonna go with: troll thread.

No they don't. No one thinks Goths are ill. Most of them do what they do for perfectly rational and understandable reasons.

My definition has nothing to do with what the medical profession says. If you're sad and can't be happy no matter what, something is wrong with your mind. If you bother the fuck out of other people and can't stop doing it even if you realize what you're doing, there's something wrong with your mind.

Anything else you feel or do or feel may be outside social norms, but it isn't mental illness IMO.

Actually OP, it's very simple, it's called the "DSM," Diagnostic Service Manual. Written by a panel of health and psychology experts, it will tell you exactly what mental illnesses are. Here you go, now please, stop trolling:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diagnostic_and_Statistical_Manual_of_Mental_Disorders

This is a good way to make his point for him.

DSM is nothing but arbitrarily-defined archetypes that attempt to organize and categorize human emotions and behaviors in a way that they cannot possibly be. At least not with any accuracy.

I'm compare it to politics.

'Oh, you support capital punishment? You're a Republican!'

'What's that? You're pro-choice? Democrat, then!'

'Wait, both? Well, I guess you're just terminally unique.'

You can read minds?

Isn't rationality subjective?

lol... your opinion means little. Psychiatry defines it by not adhering to "social norms", which don't even exist.

Arbitrarily defined? You do realize that the DSM is published by the American Psychiatric Association, an organization of health professionals? The DSM is not just arbitrarily defined at all, it represents a body of some 36,000 professionals and their representatives who come together and create a diagnostic manual based on the best information and research available at the time.

I emphasize at the time because while psychiatry may be an evolving science, it still is very much a science.

Sorry you're butthurt over me calling the DSM a terrible, reeking, horrible pile of shit that encourages evaluation of patients with checklists rather than intelligent thought; giving an entire profession a bad name.

My apologies.

So you're denying the relevance of established medical practice, but you seem to think I can't do the same thing? If my opinion means little, then so does yours.

I merely mean to define mental illness in such a way as to demonstrate that it is a real thing, but not necessarily tied to social norms. It doesn't matter how psychiatrists define it. They are going to make certain a large number of things fall under their "mental illness" umbrella for obvious reasons. That doesn't mean that mental illness doesn't exist or can't be defined.

A science based on medical favouritism, false judgments and a lack of knowledge of modern society?

Not butthurt at all, I was just correcting your factual inaccuracies.

And your characterization of the DSM as a "horrible pile of shit" just goes to show how little you know about the subject anyways. No sweat off my back, you are ignorant.

"Medical favouritism, false judgements, and a lack of knowledge of modern society?"

I'm not sure where you are getting your information from. In fact, the DSM-5 was created over a 3 year period, involving a panel of medical and health professionals, and containing 3 6-week "open comment periods" from over 10,000 advocates and families of mental health patients. http://www.dsm5.org/Pages/Default.aspx

That doesn't sound like a "false judgement" or "lack of knowledge" at all. But maybe you have different sources you can cite?

lol.. the same "psychiatrists" who arbitrarily voted homosexuality out of the DSM years ago. And who deem people with "non-traditionalist" as ill? lol.. all psychiatrists are a bunch of jokers, involved in a false science.

I'll have ten times more respect for a real medical discipline, like cardiology or neurology, over these fuckstains called "mental health professionals".
