So... How many of you nerds on a tech forum know anything about psychology beyond an intro course in college or what you've heard other people tell you?

I've read a whole for Dummies book and read Psychology Today occasionally. I'm like, totally qualified, to like, judge.

Where are you getting the notion that psychiatry is based on normalcy?

I'm going to guess a combination of his own misguided thoughts and bad psychiatrists.

The goal of psychiatry is not existential debate. It's making you function like a normal human being. Yes, it is hard to classify 'normal,' but there's a sample size of about six billion people that gives some indicators.

You may think running around pantsless screaming about the alien invasion is 'normal.' But it is generally understood to not be.

However, a good doctor will leave the 'normal' talk to such extreme examples. Not tell you how fucked up you are because you show mild symptoms relating to depression, ADD, schizo disorders, ect...the kind of stuff that many if not MOST people have symptoms of at some point.

It's about the symptoms that YOU are having trouble with, that YOU feel need to be addressed in order to be able to function. So, OP, the quack is probably...you.

lol.. you seriously believe that mental health professionals endorse that? Psychiatry is a tool designed to control, admit it.

Trained psychologist here. It's a tricky issue; if you're deemed to be so out of it that you may end up hurting yourself, we have to section you. If you're just sort of....happy and semi out of it, then we can't/won't. Believe me it's not a tool to control, it's barely able to help the people that want it.

Says one with thousands of posts on said forum, mostly on I'd presume tech topics.

I detest psychiatry. I don't see why holding and expressing an opinion is "wrong".

apologist for what? I'm telling you the system is overburdened and under-funded. Do you actually think anyone is going out of their way to invest more time into controlling vagrants who are hallucinating?

lol.. there is no such thing as "good" psychiatrist. All of them are corrupt, as it's an inherently corrupt practice.

I'm saying that you and your profession are corrupt. It's an intrinsically corrupted system.

Where are you getting the notion that psychiatry is based on normalcy?

This is the norm of psychiatry.

As said, normalcy is subjective. Do you honestly believe that it's not? Considering everybody looks, thinks, feels and values differently, this is proof of subjectivity.

So it's obvious you're very butthurt over some personal issue. Good luck with the whole 'angsty kid' thing. You may want to get over it and learn how to make independent judgements, so as to not look like a ridiculous hypocrite.

If this is how you feel about the doctors, how angry must you be with the inefficient for-profit hospitals and insurers?

I notice he ignored what I said so he could just stick to his 'WE'RE NOT ALL THE SAME, DAMMIT' argument.

edit: No use trying to argue with people like that, even if you are attempting it for their benefit. It's no different than fundies and their 'Satan did it to try and trick me' explanations for everything.

I live amongst humans as a human. Subjectivity is self-evident. I don't need to attend any "medical school". I'd rather drink horse urine that study psychiatry anyhow. Then again, Sun Tzu did say to defeat one's enemy one must know it, so it may be of consequence to do so.

Youre argument is invalid because you believe psychiatry is based on normalcy. Which is 100% false. If Im wrong please provide credible documentation or peer studies supporting your idea.

The second statement I, and everyone here probably, agrees with. However, your first statement is completely false.

The word "butthurt" should be outlawed. lol... since when is it "bad" to voice dislike or grievance at something? As for hypocrisy, duh, everybody is a hypocrite and no person is ever consistent. Are you?

ha lol.. you're not my father, who the hell are you?

Yes, psychiatrists who say that drinking coffee is an illness, and that not holding interests that the many have is "bad".

Psychiatrists are a waste of space, nobody needs them.

Having an opinion is not wrong. It's just that your opinion is wrong.

Once again OP, have you been to a psychiatrist? What did he/she diagnose you with ?

lol.. an opinion cannot be "wrong" by definition.

Again, who are you to question me? You cite psychiatry, yet you people don't even understand basic social protocols.

The problem is, you're a fucking idiot. And you have no idea what you're talking about.

You have no idea what the education, training, hard neuroscience, etc involves, as evidenced by your insultingly asinine rants about "normalcy" and other made-up definitions.

Clearly, you don't have the slightest idea. You are so utterly transparent and predictable it's a joke.

Did mommy take you in recently and mean doctor man made you take the pills that your invisible friends warned you about?

I suffer with Bipolar Mood Affective Disorder, yes mental health and mental illness exist.

I need them.

I can hardly function without my medication.

lol..

Psychiatry is evil. Morals don't exist as all know, but it's an evil practice nonetheless. Medicine is about curing people and making them better, yet psychiatry is the odd one out. It was invented and still exists as a tool to punish people, especially those who are "normal". lol.. anybody with half a brain knows that normalcy is subjective, and frankly doesn't exist.
