Rap is pathetic. The lyrics? Most are not only incredibly stupid, but are repeated about 60 times through the song to make it a full 4 minute song. The background music? Its just crappy electronica - any electronica artist worth a damn could make a 500x better background track.

Some rap is good, and some does show actual talent. But the ratio of talent to no talent is striking.

Most rappers try to be something they are not, because they want to make lots of money off kids who think its hip.

lol, this thread is hilarious. Rap is extremely pathetic, and whoever brought in the race issue with it in the first page was a moron. Their skin color has nothing to do with how bad their music is. The current rap music sucks, the lyrics suck, just everything about rap plain and simply sucks. Yes, the music may be entertaining to a bunch of immature wannabe thugs, but it does NOT make it good music. No matter of opinion can change that fact. Most people I have known to listen to rap never listen to it while they are by themselves even (Such as in their dorm room by themselves). They always seem to crank it up while driving their cars with the windows rolled down and the bass cranked. It's all about image and the in-crowd, not about great music.

You can't argue that popularity makes something great. Many of the great art pieces and music weren't popular items, but they had a quality or convention to them that made them great. The majority of rap has the same artistic skill as 10 year olds.

It may take a modicum of computer skills to sample, it certainly doesn't take any musical skills whatsoever. Now the person who originally recorded the track being sampled - THEY'RE the musician, not the sampler! Same obviously applies to scratchers.

Look as far as I'm concerned you can and, obviously, will continue to listen to whatever you like. However, please don't confuse rap with music. It just doesn't meet any of the following criteria:

* rappers talk, they don't sing;
* rap doesn't involve actual music played by musicians;
* doggerel verse doesn't even properly equate with poetry let alone lyrics; and
* it sucks (okay that might be opinion )

As far as how good a rapper, or a musician for that matter, is, as has been pointed out repeatedly, never confuse monetary success with quality. If money equalled quality then we'd all be using AOL.

wow, are you sure you know what music is? I am not big on music, but I don't think it takes a guitar or a piano or any traditional musical instrucments to make music. After all, it is with creativity that we advance.

Rap is music, whether you like it or not. For the most part, it might not be good music because of all the wannabes, but people like 2pac has manage to make it a new form of music to express themselves. You guys need to get off your high horse and stop telling people what music is or is not.

If only it was this easy. What you fail to realize is that the music is, as I said before, just a damn tool to sell clothes, CDs and most appealing, a persona. Lol. Look on the first page of this thread. BR said "I think [mozart's] music is crap" and several posts later, you say he's a smart person. Is it me, or does something not add up here?

If you're not gonna call classical music crap, then why praise someone that they are smart when they said that?

In case you didn't understand, I was making an example. Just as you say that rap is crap, I have the right to say that Classical music is crap. Both statements are opinions. Whether or not I dislike classical, or you dislike rap, both are still valid music forms.

Good music does not depend solely on opinions. You may claims that a simple 3 note pattern that repeats for 4 mins is better than the 40th Symphony, but that has as much merit as me claiming to be the rightful heir to the throne of england.

You can say that rap entertains you, you can say that you like it, but you cannot say that as far as music is concerned, rap good music.
