I got the go ahead from work today to pick a new laptop. I was thinking about the 13" Pro but there's all these rumors about a retina MBA incoming? What you guys/gals think?

Rumors aside, until Intel actually starts delivering the chips they need to make a retina MBA, and retain the battery life it isn't coming.

Seems possible with Broadwell, just look at the Dell XPS 13.

$1299... They should have made it starting at $999 and killed the rest of the MBA line. Who the hell is going to buy the regular MBA instead of the new machine?

Your two sentences contradict each other (or one explains the other, for that matter).

That is exactly why they made it start at $1299, otherwise this will cannibalize their own MBA line.

The old MBA's are now useless. Old screens and not that much faster than Core M. Why not just sell one super light laptop and if you want more power move up the Pro.

You answered your own question. They're much cheaper!

*If* this new Macbook 12" starts at $999 then you may have a point (it will probably kill the higher end MBA), but it starts at $1299, which you pointed out in the first place.

Apple now does this everywhere, old iPhone carcasses, iPods that no-one wants anymore, non-retina MBPs, on and on.

My guess is that it's because they have the production lines all built out, and it's very cheap to produce these things, and people that wouldn't buy the top of line stuff, will buy the old stuff just because it's Apple branded.

It does leave their site with a messy combination of current products and last year's obsolete stuff though.

I like a lot of things about the new MB, but honestly it seems TOO thin to me, if what thin-ness means is carrying a dongle to use USB and/or read an SD card. I would also be concerned about the loss of MagSafe - I have always loved that feature.

I note they have added that Force Touch trackpad (as well as some processor and graphics bumps) to the 13" Retina MBP - at this point I think that is the machine I'd get.

The 12" 2304x1440 is perfect in terms of Yosemite ergonomics. This is what we predicted.

Full size keyboard. Glad the reduced size keyboard rumour was bull, as many of as thought it would be.

USB C is fine, but would have preferred two ports, esp. since the charger uses one. I was only expecting one though.

Gold is good.

However, as mentioned in other threads, I will wait for Skylake (H.265 support in hardware), and to see just how good the screen is.

MBP does get the new trackpad:

Apple's MacBook Pro lineup was given a refresh on Monday, bringing the new Force Touch trackpad with haptic feedback, as well as Intel's latest-generation Broadwell processors to the 13-inch MacBook Pro.

adapter costs $80
$100 in Canada. Ouch. I guess the good news it allows you to charge and use USB 3 at the same time.

What about VGA?

EDIT:

They have one. Same adapter, but instead of HDMI, it's VGA. For the same price. So, I'm looking at spending $200 in adapters. Double ouch.

Making an ultra thin laptop with virtually no functional I/O ports is not a revolution. It's a cash grab. Basically turning their laptops into the damn iPad, but for the same high price.
