I was thinking in the same sense as Azraele. I don't think he's stupid the way he handles things..or he would be dead by now.
Define stupid. Does "stupid" refer to as messing with the US?

Well let's be honest, the coalition allowed him to survive. Seems he may have cancer now so perhaps from now on Allah will call the shots.

He invaded Kuwait thinking the world wouldn't react. Duh. He was solidly convinced the attack to liberate Kuwait would come by sea leaving the western flank completely open. Oy. He releases oil into the gulf and sets fire to every single Kuwaiti oil site hoping to provoke the allies into doing something rash; any sympathy he might have received evaporated. Ouch.

Yeah, pure genius there.

I think this thread poses a stupid question. Of course NOT! Obviously, anyone with a brain can see that he is not stupid at all. We may not like him, he may be a satanic bastard/psycho or something, but definitely not lacking intelligence IMO!

Is Saddam stupid? I wouldn't say stupid - ignorant, yes, but he is cunning.

The viewpoint you also have to take is that Saddam feels that he is completely in the right. From his perspective, he's the good guy.

i took a national security class last semester (senior seminar class). WE discussed about rational actor models etc etc. I don't think hussien is stupid, he jus going insane/crazy.

Jelly, I think you missed my point.

People expect him to be like Snidely Whiplash and cower before Dudley Do-Right (us) because hey, he's the bad guy. But from his point of view, he's not. I'm not saying he is - he's a disgusting piece of filth - but you have to look at it from his perspective.

Is he insane? I don't think so; he just thinks that he is in the right.

Not the first time and it won't be the last. But I doubt Saddum thinks he's fully justified in his past current and future atrosities. However, after watching CNN's coverage today of the US strike against the Desert Snipers, I must admit if Saddum watched it he might certainly feel encouraged to continue his behavior. CNN went out of their way to discuss the alleged civilian casualties, Iraqi's deep hurt and portrayed the act as something unjustified. They didn't do that on Clinton's watch. Curious.
