Consulting is where the money is in IT. I've thought about going that route as I could make much more money, but I've got a pretty sweet job right now that has relatively low stress. I'm never going to be a 60-80-100 hours/week worker again. It just isn't that important to me at this stage in my life.
Same here. I never would have taken a consulting job unless it was salaried with full benefits.
The company I landed with as a consultant pays me well, sends us all to lots of training, has a very laid back atmosphere, and encourages working from home. We're all paid a salary with full benefits.
I was extremely leery of taking a consulting job but I love not having to deal with stupid office politics and knowing that if I don't like the place I'm currently working on a project it's no big deal because within a few weeks or months I'll move on somewhere else.
No more on call, sometimes I work less than 40 hours per week, and company has a bi-weekly Happy Hour at the office with free beer and food. I cannot complain.
