Consulting is where the money is in IT. I've thought about going that route as I could make much more money, but I've got a pretty sweet job right now that has relatively low stress. I'm never going to be a 60-80-100 hours/week worker again. It just isn't that important to me at this stage in my life.

Same here. I never would have taken a consulting job unless it was salaried with full benefits.

The company I landed with as a consultant pays me well, sends us all to lots of training, has a very laid back atmosphere, and encourages working from home. We're all paid a salary with full benefits.

I was extremely leery of taking a consulting job but I love not having to deal with stupid office politics and knowing that if I don't like the place I'm currently working on a project it's no big deal because within a few weeks or months I'll move on somewhere else.

No more on call, sometimes I work less than 40 hours per week, and company has a bi-weekly Happy Hour at the office with free beer and food. I cannot complain.

What the hell are you talking about?
Banks lend up to 5x your annual income for housing.

You think someone who makes 100k can only buy a 250k house?

5x is absurd! I'm almost a 1:1 ratio income/house biatches! I'm gonna be debt free early 30's.

Of corse it is good money. People live up to their limits. You likely have people with similar debt because they buy as much as they like. Their stuff is just nicer but they have the debt from the 500k house and 80k cars and much more frivolous items.

It's not about the money you make it's how you use it. I've known relatives that have been making 3x what I have and they don't have shit to show for it.

you better hope that your kids are very bright, or very stupid. Anything in betwen means you pay money

Yes, I know this (sadly). I do have an advantage in that my kids can live at home as I live within 20 miles of 3 universities and a few community colleges. They can live at home and commute.

Lol. You think $1000 a month is going to cover property tax, insurance, and utilties? And are you not going to eat?

I've lived on it before. Even less a few times. It's not 'fun', but it's doable as long as you live smart. Even with a family.

the state that tells their masses they can't take out a equity line because they are too stupid to realize they are putting up their house when they can't pay it back.

Yes, by limiting the percentage the consumer can borrow, they are completely blocking all equity loans.

Again everything is relative, but $100k ain't much if you're living in a place like NYC, its barely passable even for singles when considering cost of living. Hell, even $250k isn't much in this town.

wow. the stupidity of ATOT posters is amazing.

My aunt & uncle own their own place on the upper west side.
free and clear.. no mortgage.
they own 2 cars... get new ones every 3 years.
they have 3 kids... 2 of which are going thru college starting this year.
they take plenty of vacations.
and make under $100,000 combined.

stop with the $5000 hookers and blow every night, live within your means.. and you can get by on under $250k.

Maybe if you lived on 5th avenue but $100k is affordable in the boroughs and surrounding areas.

indeed.

I lived decently on 30K with a roommate when I first graduated college, and I live pretty well by myself now that I'm making about double that.

Hmm...if $100k isn't much (talking about single person income), I wonder what most of the people in this thread make?

I personally (now) make quite a bit less than $100k. I've made it 3 or 4 times in my life but that was when I was paid overtime. With my wife and I both working, we will only top it this year because of $17,000_+ severance received from losing a job (and getting a job very quickly allowing me to double up and bank it).

My wife doesn't make much but she enjoys the job, works about 8 months out of the year and the job is literally about 700 feet from my front door (school).

Let's see how that changes after they start paying for college.

reality is, everything in life is different for individuals, no matter how hard you try, not everyone can be aunt and uncle mcguyver.

seriously. avg 1br condo in manhattan around 750sqft is 800K.
i'd love to see two individuals making $50k a piece pull that off w/o selling off the wife for extra scratch...

btw, nothing wrong with hookers and blow...
