Is smoking supposed to do something?

Last night marks the third time I've attempted to inhale smoke into my lungs. First time was three years ago with a cigar. Second time was about two months ago with some tobacco in a hookah. Third time was last night when I both did some hits from a hookah and shared a joint with some people.

So anyway, I'm confused. The hookah wasn't bad - it was mango-flavored which was kinda nice. But the joint? Basically like breathing dirt. Made my mouth taste bad for a little while and that was it.

Is smoking tobacco or marijuana supposed to make you feel different somehow? Because it sure didn't seem like it to me. Maybe I need to do more. But I sure don't see how anyone could get addicted to something that has a slight negative effect and no detectable positive effect. If it at least felt sort of good, I might understand.

Tobacco, when inhaled properly and on an infrequent basis, most definitely makes you feel different, but only for a few minutes.

When you don't inhale smoke still comes out. Pot will definitely do something to you, cigarettes are easier not to notice but if you're smoking an entire one for the first time you should get a kind of buzz.

As a cigarette smoker I'm telling you to quit while you're ahead or you'll deal with that addiction the rest of your life. I quit for 3 years and somehow ended up doing it again. Will probably quit again soon but now I won't even feel comfortable with it after 3 years.

1) You don't inhale cigar smoke. Good cigars taste good. Bad ones...
2) I don't think you inhale hookah?
3) You do inhale joints. But if it's crap weed, then nothing. You'll know when you smoke the good stuff after you just realized you ate an entire bag of cheetos while contemplating how funny the ant crawling across the floor is that tried to steal a crumb from you.

Sounds like you smoked some crappy bud. Cigar smoking is really just rolling the smoke around in your mouth, hookahs are commonly flavored, and good bud tastes fantastic. It doesn't sound like you did anything wrong, but you only experienced a small part of the spectrum.

the easiest way to insure you're inhaling is take a drag off the joint, cig, whatever, hold it in your mouth and then breathe in through your nose and exhale through the nose (not necessary) but that proof you've definitely inhaled it.

either you smoked bunk weed or you didn't really inhale it.
I didn't really get high the first time i smoked weed either, b/c i am now convinced i wasnt really inhaling.
same with cigs. i remember it vividly, i was at the bowling alley. I took a drag of cig, had it in my mouth and stepped up a step to sit down and accidentially breathed thru my nose...bam. I got a massive head rush.

cigs won't get you high per se, they will give you a little head rush kind of buzz feeling when you first start inhaling it. That goes away. So, its pretty much worthless after you're a regular smoker.

Yeah, I probably was just doing it wrong. Not sure how to do it right, but meh.

I wasn't planning on "getting into" smoking. Definitely not going to smoke cigs or buy stuff to smoke. Three times since 2005 is pretty infrequent.

First timers usually don't get a buzz unless they get a really nice hit, or unless someone helps them get a nice hit.

one way you can tell if you inhaled is if you exhale smoke thru your nose...
try that...see if you feel the "light headed" feeling...

If marijuana didn't make you feel "different" after smoking it, it wouldn't be illegal in the US.
