Is social media detrimental vacations?

So we've been traveling for a little bit now and the weather hasn't been great. A bit on the cool and rainy side. Yet when we get to a major tourist spot I'll see people suddenly take off heavy jackets and lay down for a picture, like its nice and warm. I saw one woman actually get out a fan and pose fanning herself as if to say "its so warm here i need this." But quickly hopped up and put her jacket back on once the photo was taken. Or they quickly throw off rain jackets and put umbrellas to the side during a brief dry spell to get their picture taken, strike their poses and throw some sunny instagram filters on the picture. "See - My vacation was perfect."

I often hear people complain about little things that 'ruined the trip' and I feel like social media has increased the pressure for everything to be perfect on a vacation. So if its not they have to pretend for an audience that it was.

social media hasn't ruined any of my vacations..because I don't let it...oh and I'm not selfie obsessed. I go on vacations for me...not to show everyone else "look what I did".

Yup. Vacation is to get away from all that, enjoy some quality me/family time without the daily bullshit.

Selfie idiots have degraded the travel experience for the rest of humanity.

the internet was a bad idea.

Best bad idea ever!

But seriously, while both social media itself and the internet at large have their negatives, the latter is certainly responsible for a tremendous amount of good.

The worst mistake us nerds ever did was finally convince people computers were 'cool' and for everyone.

You think people didn't do that back in the day when taking vacation photos with their Brownie box cameras and their Instamatics?

They did.

I like taking pictures on vacation because I get antsy just sitting around doing nothing. Plus it helps combat social anxiety, lol. Gives me something to do.

Along the same lines, one that I get a kick out of is commonly seen in rock climbing videos. It's common to attempt hard climbs in winter/colder months because adhesion to the rock is better. You see people at the base sitting in the snow in heavy down coats, hats, gloves. And the climber in the video is shirtless.

Sometimes I wish the jocks and cheerleaders would take back their sports and let us have our computers and video games.

Nowhere near the rate or level of rudeness with which it is done these days.

It seems nearly every single tourist has to take a selfie in front of every significant painting/sculpture in every significant gallery/museum in every major city in every country around the world.

They usually don't even look at the art, they just want a shot of themselves in front of it; proving to the world that they were just like every other tourist in front of every significant...well I think you get the picture now..

You should make it so people can search for and jump into hundreds of conversations at once if they want." "Ooh, good idea! I imagine only the most well-informed people with the most critical information to share will use that feature.

Film was expensive. People didn't take 500 selfies or even 500 photos on a 10 day vacation to Europe in 1960.

To be fair, a lot of places are just plain boring to visit; sometimes taking a photo and posting it and discussing it and looking back on it is more fun than actually being there, lol.

I think a lot of vacations go that route too. Like Disneyland...you're really just standing in line a lot, most of the day. I'd rather go on a nice date where you get get dinner some place good, then have two hours of entertainment at a movie, then find a dessert place to enjoy something sweet & have a good conversation, because then you're constantly doing stuff & having a good time for the entire block of time spent. A lot of vacations feel like you're just commuting (long car ride or everything associated with airline travel), looking at something that has about a minute's worth of enjoyment, and then finding food lol.

I have a friend whose family is very checklist-oriented; it's not so much about visiting the site as it is checking the box off that they visited the site, i.e. RV'ing & stuff. Like the Grand Canyon is cool to visit & look at for like five minutes, but it's a lot more fun if you're actually doing something like hiking in it. I dunno what I'm trying to say. Everyone's vacations & family trips are different. But I think a lot of them are over-hyped & taking selfies in front of art installations is a good coping strategy, haha.

I think thats vacationing badly if thats the result. There are an incredible number of places that are interesting and the internet is a great way to find and evaluate your options

Almost all my vacation pictures are of the empty mugs of beer I am drinking that I post so that people not on vacation can see what they are missing at noon. I believe in experiencing things without the filter of a phone screen so I don't take many pictures of stuff.

Sorry, but I just don't believe that blocking the view of "art installations" that people paid up to 30 Euros and waited in line to see, so you can pop off a selfie, is a "good coping strategy",

It is complete and utter jackassery.
