Is Socket AM3 dead?

It seems as though Llano is on Socket FM1, and Bulldozer is on Socket AM3+.

I was hoping for a modern drop-in upgrade for my Phenom II X4, but it's looking more and more as though the 1100T is going to be the fastest CPU made for my platform.

Do any of you know of a 32nm CPU that will come out for Socket AM3?

You can keep your Phenom ][ X4 for now and just sell your motherboard for an AM3+ board which gives you at least another year worth of upgrades from Bulldozer to Piledriver.

You are screwed, just as i am. I have 2 AM3 systems in my home i purchased in 09 when AMD announced BD would be on AM3, what a huge mistake that was.

You've had systems for 2 years and you're mad that there's a new platform for a new architecture? Even if it was the same socket, it would require a BIOS update, which are generally not supported for 2+ year old boards.

There are AM3 boards that unofficially support BD, the manufacturers released new BIOSes for a some of the more recent AM3 boards.

I wouldnt be upset if AMD hadnt pulled the bait n switch last year when they "decided" AM3+ would be a better idea.

Also if you buy from a top tier company(like asus) they are generally pretty good about bios updates. Hell i even have a almost 4 year old foxconn AM2+ board in my server that got a updated bios supporting the X6's.

I am hoping that AMD does release some for the AM3 because lets be honest how many AM3+ owners do you know? I don't know any because everyone I know including myself is using AM3.

After the BD launch why do you even want an upgrade? It would be more of a sidegrade/downgrade.

Yeah AM3 won't see anything new but looking at benches, AM3 Phenoms are still in the race compared to Bulldozer.

I'm glad I didn't bought an AM3+ mobo just for BD.

FM2 should be interesting, let's keep the hope!

Well, it was worth the upgrade back then since you still have a decent CPU 4 years later. You could simply overclock it and let it serve you well till your next upgrade!

Yeah it's a real piss-off that Bulldozer is not AM3 compatible in spite of AMD's claims otherwise.

I've lost all respect for AMD as a company at this point. They used to make great CPUs for the enthusiast community and offered excellent socket longevity, but these days they've completely lost touch with us, the hardware enthusiasts, that they should be viewing as an important part of their target market.

Given their track record, we won't see anything new for AM3.

Perhaps we'll see a class action lawsuit. Saying Bulldozer would be AM3 is false advertising in a sense. The problem is that it would be difficult to prove. I don't think AMD came right out and officially stated or guaranteed that Bulldozer would work on AM3.

I'll bet that the motherboard manufacturers are completely up in arms over this whole fiasco. It's like somebody's idea of a bad joke.

I 100% agree with this post, and lost alot of respect for AMD with all the recent lies as well.

Just overclock the X4 as much as you can. 4.0GHZ clock speeds are common. Phenom II while not a speed demon, will be quite fast and competitive at 4+GHZ speeds

I completely agree. AMD should have allowed MB makers to allow BD on motherboards they were comfortable supporting. The BD CPUs can use a lot of power, so I do understand the issues with running the 8150 on a very cheap board. Definitely sucks for those with AM3 boards, but at this point sticking with a 1090T maybe is better anyways.

Perfectly happy with my 2 AM3 based systems. Having an SSD is the key in today's desktops. People playing the CPU upgrade game and not having an SSD are foolish.

I'd say it's up to the manufacturer who made your board. I know the 2 I have, M4A89GTD PRO/USB3, have a beta bios for the AM3+ chips. Currently I'm not got to get a BD just because the performance just isn't there atm and since they both have a 1090t, but I like that I have the option if something should change in the future.

did AMD ever say that AM3 will support bulldozer? afaik, only certain motherboard makers claimed that some of their higher end AM3 boards will support BD. AMD themselves have been saying that AM3+ is the platform ever since i started following BD's development a year ago.

So why would you care if your AM3 board doesn't support BD? It's a crap CPU anyway.
