Is South parde island still unsafe?

I heard some stuff about it a while back related to Mexican drug rated violence. Did anyone go there this summer? any family or friends? I am trying to plan a trip for the labor day weekend and was wondering is south padre will be a good choice... worried about the safety part of it, not so much about the water quality.

I was down there for work not long ago and did not hear anything about the island being unsafe. However several locals told me not to cross the border into Mexico there.

ya, that was my next choice. I have been to south padre several times in the past (but not after 2006) so I know beach condo's and hotels... no idea bout Galveston. Anyone hear know how to look for hotel or a condo which is on the beach? If I look in any hotel sites, they do not generally mention if its on the beach.

Theres not anymore Mexican cartel violence in South Padre, than anywhere else in Texas. In terms of most cartel violence, San Antonio has the most cartel related crimes. South Padre does have a theft problem, alway has and always will. Unsecured stuff belonging to drunk people makes easy pickings for criminals.

I thought 1438 had to be a typo cause the city I'm moving to has an index of 150. Sure enough it's 1400+!

from my experience there i would assume the unsafety would be due to drunk college morons, not organized mexican drug crime.

OP, why are you going to South Padre? Is it much cheaper than going somewhere with better beaches? Moving here from florida, I was shocked at how shitty South Padre is. And, it's supposed to be the best beach in texas D:

There are no hotels directly on the beach at galveston, you have to cross a road between the beach and the hotel.

A few years ago my wife and I stayed at the hotel Galvez. The rooms are a little small, but they have nice pool and the hotel is right across the street from the beach.
