Install on 12 different machines, no problem.

Its a bigger than the SP1, but considering all the SECURITY Add-on for FREE;
Its highly recommended.

The Pop-Up blocker works wonders - simple and doesn't bother you unless a web site
is punaciously doing the pop-up. I've got rid of my other 3rd. party AD-Remover.

However, I'm not that fond of the Wireless feature;
it is still lame compare to the 3rd party solution bundled with most WIFI card.

Highly recommended. Bear in mind you only hear about the 'problems', people rarely post to say everything went fine. At this point most new PC's are shipping with it and it includes security changes that are worth getting on your box.

Somewhere on MS's site it says all machines will eventually require SP 1 and higher. So i don't see any problems with it.

I am using SP2 on my desktop and SP1 on all laptops(for some reason I see only issues with SP2 and notebook compturs right now. Not major ones, just performance issues and the like). Other than that...can't go wrong with either one unless your dying for firewall support from SP2

Of the 10 XP systems I maintain I've installed SP2 on only 1. I've had no problems with any of the 10, and don't expect to.

Any reason you've only updated one? If they are connected to the internet you should absolutely plan on deploying SP2. The only reason not to is application incompatibility (in which case the application should be updated).

No compelling reason to do so. All systems access the internet daily and I don't anticipate any problems with any of them. Can anyone give me a ~really~ good reason why I need to update at this time? None of the systems in question use IE or OE, the SP2 firewall is not required, and I have experienced absolutely no problems whatsoever with any of the systems. If at some point in the future, it becomes %4^&75%2#@... just a sec...

Seriously, I see no pressing urgency to update to SP2 at this time.

Worms can infect unpatched machines regardless of what browser or email program you use. You should always apply security updates to machines connected to the internet, period.

Realistically, new worms can infect the patched machine, so SP2 is no guarantee. Can you specifically point out how a worm/virus/trojan will not be allowed entry by installing SP2?

One should always practice safe-computing, I agree. I am not convinced that SP2 is the nirvana that some seem to think.

The question was: is SP2 for XP a must install?

I'm not convinced it is. For those relying on IE and OE I would recommend it. Me? I consider it optional at this time and haven't seen anything to convince me that I must install it or horrible consequences will befall my computer systems.

I've been using SP1 since it came out, never install updates from Microsoft, and have had zero problems... then again I could just be lucky.

Do you mean the updates it contains, or future updates? None of the updates SP2 contains seem to affect any of my day-to-day computing, ergo my reason for not rushing to embrace it.

I chalk SP2 up to mostly hype for those people that don't know how to secure their computer. It might be ok for a newbie, but I ain't going near it.

Nah, maybe you're just a little more secure in your computing habits. I have three home systems running Win XP and I haven't installed any updates on any of them. All systems connect daily to internet for extended periods of time, none have encountered any problems. I don't anticipate any either.

I don't mean to monopolize the thread, but here's some relevant URLs concerning SP2 and what it provides:

Your logic baffles me. SP2 corrects a multitide of critical security flaws within the operating system. It's people who refuse to install critical security updates who "don't know how to secure their computer." The changes in SP2 go well beyond the built-in firewall and added nags about updating virus definitions and installing ActiveX controls.

Again, your logic is absurd. People who are "secure in their computing habits" keep their software and operating system up-to-date with the latest patches and fixes. There are countless viruses and worms specifically designed to exploit security flaws within Windows. Keeping your OS as up-to-date helps protect you from these malicious programs.

Care to elaborate on your constructive post? Exactly what major flaws have been created by SP2? Please be specific.

Service Pack 2 is not an upgrade for windows. Its rather another new Windows. Think of it as Win98-WinME.

I am a system integrator and in each and every computer that I sell, (which, thankfully, have been MANY since SP2 came out) I've installed it, and I solve many virus/spyware/unstability problems that happen with people who I've sold computers to before with it. (Besides un-installing IE and installing FireFox).

Highly recomended. If you can UPDATE your WinXP installation CD w/SP2 and do a fresh install, it would be even better.
