Is splitting cats a bad idea?

So I used to only have one cat, but a few months ago, I got another. It's a boy and a girl. At first, they hated each other, but now they seem to like each other - they play a lot, etc. I'm moving soon and wanted to take one of the cats with me and leave one of the other cats behind. Is this a bad idea to separate them?

No it's a great idea, gets a bit messy though. Table saw is the easiest method.

I wouldn't separate them. Everybody likes stability in their lives, even cats. They're good company for each other. Take them both.

Cats do best when they have a companion. I wouldn't split them up if you can.

i was driving behind my sister today on a country road and watched her hit a cat!!

it might've been split, i'm not sure, but it didn't look well when i drove past.

after seeing that, i can in no way advocate it.

I don't see the point. Can you honestly say there's substantially more effort in caring for two cats than one?

The cats will probably survive, but if they get along I don't see the motivation.

The cats should be fine. But caring for 3 cats is going to be no different then caring for 4.

I think it's wrong to leave one behind. Not only is it used to the other cat, it's used to you. I couldn't ditch an animal like that.

Did you ask to see if you can take the cat. Or you could always sneak in at night and catnap it.

The other person isn't willing to part with it? How did the discussion go? What was his/her preference?

Cats are certainly adaptable*, and will be fine if they're alone or with others (provided they actually get along). If you feel strongly about your cat, then take it. If you're kinda "meh", then see how passionate the other owner feels about keeping both.

edit: *With that said, I have seen what I would consider a mourning period when one of my cat's sister died suddenly. She was a very sad kitty. :'(
