I rather enjoy swtor, I cant speak for the pve endgame though. The stories are great, although I would guess there will be some that you wont like, I for instance couldn't stand the scoundrel story and still haven't finished it, thought the agent story was pretty average but loved the Jedi Knight and trooper stories.

As far as a single player aspects go, you can customize your look fairly early with the modable gear that you can upgrade as you level. Some of the looks can be rather expensive so that would take time but I have been able to find stuff I enjoy for cheap as well.

The game itself is pretty easy if you are a mmorpg vet and if you do all the quests minus the group quests as you go you can easily stay at the upper limit of level to still get xp from them. If you take the time after finishing the second planet (when you get your ship) to have a look at the pvp, and ship side games you will probably have outleveled the third planet before you start it. (note this is as a subscriber, I know ftp players gets xp penalties so I am not sure how bad things are for them)

If you enjoy the pvp at all, the pvp rewards you get for playing pvp can be be converted to pve gear (there really is not much pvp gear pre max level) so you can always choose to do some leveling in pvp without having to worry about your gear for when you decide to do some questing again.

Also every class is a pet class for solo play (they are fairly effective without micromanaging). Low level does have crappy travel skills like usual, alts can get boosts for that but I believe your first char is going to have to run and drive slow for longer.

Atmosphere wise its star wars so that's great if your fan. It does have a smaller feel than wow though as each planet is only a couple of zones large so you can never travel around a large expanse like in wow. You do get a bit of a feel of flying around the galaxy, but travel between planets is a just a quick couple second animation if your looking out the front of your ship. Also the equivalent of the capital city where everyone hangs out is a space station so no neat awe inspiring sites while standing around.

You can get around that by playing the 2 space games (rail shooter and PVP) or by doing flashpoints, and it's really more like ~10 sidequests per planet, but yes that's something that KOTOR 1-2 didn't have as much of. It's maybe double the sidequests of KOTOR 1-2, and many of them are fun.

You can also get XP boosts to level up without sidequests, but those real money or in-game credits that you probably won't have as a new player.

For endgame raiding maybe, but for single-player? F2P doesn't make you pay for any of the single-player content up to level 50 which is all of the class stories.

Anyway, it's free so give it a try.

F2P actually has limits on what equipment you can use, and how much loot you can get as a reward from quests. I got a nice piece of armor that I couldn't equip. The game told me to subscribe to use it.

It was a clone of 2006 WoW that came out in 2012 if that tells you anything.

It doesn't. What is it supposed to tell me? I haven't played WoW since Burning Crusade. I'd rather play SWTOR than WoW simply because I like Star Wars more than I like fantasy cartoons.

It copied WoW as an MMO but the earlier versions without the more modern refinements that WoW had done over the years. Essentially the first few patches played catch-up.

Not really, unless you call everything where you select an ability as a 'WoW clone'. First, in combat you have a selection of companions, which you can select depending on your character and play style. That alone is completely different than WoW. But most importantly, the main point of SW:TOR is the class storylines, which are for the most part awesome and fun to follow, that has no equivalent in WoW.

I don't know, it never really felt like a WoW close to me. I mean, it's an MMO, so it did from that respect I guess, but the story felt a lot more in-depth. I did not even know there was a really a story in WoW back when I played it.

Yep I get the wow clone aspect as well. It felt very similar, to me it was wow in the star wars universe in many ways.

The "Class" story was the only thing it had going for it but that ended around level 45-48.

What tab-targetting 3rd person MMO out there is unique enough not to be comparable to WoW?

I mean, you can just as easily compare SWTOR to any other game that you can compare to WoW, too.

It's not a meaningful argument.

If you are a hardcore WoW MMO player looking for a new MMO with exciting new MMO game mechanic twists, then sure SWTOR will be a disappointment.

If you are a RPG player, especially one who wishes there was a KOTOR 3, then you can have a lot of fun playing SWTOR for the story content and the setting.

Does WoW let you visit Tatooine and lightsaber some sandpeople? I think not. Can you turn a padawan to the dark side and make her your new Sith apprentice in Wow? Nope. Does WoW let you be James Bond . . . IN SPACE (and not the goofy Moonraker space)? Not this year.

There are people who don't care about story content and only care about game mechanics, this is probably not the best game for them.

Just downloaded and played on the free game.
Its meh.

Unimpressive acting and story. Gameplay feels like a generic ripoff of other MMO's.
We still need KOTOR 3. And for the love of holy Jesus, dont let EA make it.

Which class story did you pick, and how far did you get?

If you just did the training wheels area as a Jedi Knight, you didn't see any of the good parts of the game.

I thought the Jedi Knight story was OK, and the Consular/Sage was better. The Smuggler is fun if you want to be Han Solo for awhile.

The Sith stories are both fun, and most people agree that the James Bond-ish Imperial Agent story is the best of the 8.

I "beat" the game.

My thoughts generally are....

1. Decently interesting story. I was a Jedi Shadow.

2. There is something a little off about the animations. It feels like they are missing frames. If WOW has 30 frames to do a jump, then SWTOR feels like it has 15 frames.

3. Apparently the stories interlock together. But since this is an MMO, it takes too long to actually weave through it all. There is also a significant amount of overlap meaning that if you want to replay as another class be ready to do the same quests again.

4. PVP is very good. Huttball and arena are great. Space combat is also good.

5. The expansions are worthless and I wouldn't bother with them. I was especially disappointed by the latest one, which felt tacky and half-assed.

6. Going back to 2, the game feels very crisp but oddly soulless. It is definitely inferior to WOW. It is hard to put a finger on why I feel this way. Probably something about the pacing of the movement mechanics, and the odd feeling I get of a...lack of love on the part of the dev team. IT doesn't feel like they ever went the extra mile with this game, or ever felt truly inspired in designing it. It feels like a job.

I would say that it is a decent diversion and a way to play "KOTOR 3". I wish that they had made it less of an MMO and more of a KOTOR 3 of course. But it just feels clunky.

and the above which is the way most mmo's feel. Nobody puts any passion into them any longer.

I have a newfound interest in Star Wars stuff. I'm a fan of WOW, but haven't subbed in 2 years. I have a fairly active RIFT account but am getting bored of it (RIFT is great, btw).

I'm wondering if SWOR is any good? Is it worth looking into? I prefer the SP angle, but don't mind group stuff.

If you like linear PVE games youll like SWTOR, if you like open world PVP games youll hate it.

The biggest problem is the "theme park" feeling and the endless, mindless 'Go here and murder 20 X's and bring me their hides" missions.

Over.

And over.

And over again.

I love Star Wars, and I love the atmosphere and the different worlds. But they each end up playing too much alike, and the whole time you're playing you're just wishing to yourself you were playing a competent SP RPG, rather than some deformed hybrid...thing.

Yes, I enjoy it, pay2play for a month and decide for yourself. Some players even seem content with FTP, but I'm not.

I've just wrapped up a week of (re)playing this game. I played it with a bunch of friends when it first released, we got really into it for a month and then quit, if I remember right to go back to WoW?

I was really excited coming back. I subbed, and I think I even dropped 50 bucks into that cartel thing or whatnot, got a companion and rocket boots or something or other. I've played almost all the classes (all sith, and half republic) to around level 15 or 20 or so (few hours each with sub xp bonus).

I haven't touched it in the past 4 days though...I'm not sure why. Part of it is because I've just been super depressed I haven't even touched my rig. The other part is...I can't put my finger on it.

Others have noted it feels really unloved by the dev's. Theres just little quirks that make it feel kind of cold. The stories are mediocre...I agree the imperial agent was the most interesting.

All the classes seem the same. Moves are just reskinned versions of each other.

I'm still not sure how the whole loot thing at end game works? I've asked some guys in a random guild I joined. Apparently all the gear is exactly the same just reskinned versions of each other (a la Guild Wars 2?) I'm not sure. That might be a deal breaker too. Even though I'm not looking for an MMO like WoW to drain my soul I also don't want to spend hours chasing hollow gear...

Can't go wrong with the F2P version, maybe throw 15 bucks at it to get some decent perks but I wouldn't go nuts with it.
