Is 'Star Wars: Old Republic' any good?

I have a newfound interest in Star Wars stuff. I'm a fan of WOW, but haven't subbed in 2 years. I have a fairly active RIFT account but am getting bored of it (RIFT is great, btw).

I'm wondering if SWOR is any good? Is it worth looking into? I prefer the SP angle, but don't mind group stuff.

If you havent tried WoW in 2 years, now is the time to come back. This last xpac is great.

I haven't played it in several years, but I did enjoy the single player playthrough, and, at least for an Imperial Agent, you don't need to group with anyone to complete it although there are a few spots where it might be easier.

But that is as a single player game. Things may have changed, but I was never really impressed with it as an MMO. Again it might have changed but they didn't even have general chat channels, you could only speak to people in your immediate planet.

I had a blast in SWTOR before it went F2P. The voice-acted quest stuff is freaking amazing. I like that I can choose the outcome of many of the quest conversations, too.

My sorcerer was freaking WIN.

If you're going to be playing the game as a paid player, it's quite the enjoyable game. Each of the classes has their own unique storyline. Some of them suck, but the ones that don't really make up for the sucky ones. Imperial Agent, Sorc, Bounty Hunter, and Scoundrel were my favorite storylines with Sorc and Scoundrel leading the list.

If you're considering playing the game as a F2P player, don't expect to be playing very long. The F2P accounts are so heavily gimped. I was shocked at the level of restriction.

In any case, check it out. I enjoyed the class-specific storylines and end-game PVP.

I loved it, but I think I overplayed during the beta and was sort of burnt out by the time it went live.

As maniac said, it was awesome if you just went through and did it as single player storyline, but once you got near the end of that, it became a bit of a boring grind. Of course I'm generally not huge on MMOs, so that may be why I liked the early parts of the game.

Yes, the single-player leveling up stories are very good and there are 8 of them (4 Republic, 4 Empire).

You don't ever need to do any group stuff leveling up unless you want to, though the first "flashpoint" (4-person mini-raid) is very story heavy so it's worth seeing.

You can do it all as F2P with only minor limits. If you spend ($5?) for preferred status some of those go away.

PM me if you want a referral code to get some free starter stuff, details (NOT the code) are here: http://www.swtor.com/info/friends

You get free inventory slots, the person who refers you gets a kickback if you end up subscribing. Feel free to ask anyone else for a referral, I don't really need the kickback. But I do have crafting characters who could kickback-back you with goodies like a saber color crystal.

As others have said:
I played before it went F2P and the single player is very enjoyable.
I especially LOVE the Imperial Agent story line.
Voice Acting and side quest are actually meaningful and not-so-redundant.

What other not said:
I then played it again as F2P, and still went on with it for a good month or two.
Yes, the gimping sucks, but hey, it's a free game.

I'm doing the Sith Inquisitor storyline now, which has conversation options like:

(Shock him again)

force lightning is fun!

Yes it is good. It's not an MMO you'll play for months and months, but if you play it as a 'single player game with other players' it's great. There are 2 factions (empire and republic), each faction with 4 classes, and each of these 8 empire/class combination has its own full storyline. Some are better than others but they're all great. The only problem is that doing the class-specific quests alone is not enough to take you through the whole class story, so you have to do faction quests too (or maybe flashpoints or PvP or space combat until you get the level needed to continue your class quest), which is fine for the first character in the faction, but when you're playing the 2nd character in the same faction, it gets repetitive.

Still, it's great fun for a few months.

I'd say "Meh-to-decent"

First off, I don't really care for MMOs. Oh sure, the concept is fine, but the practice is generally just too rote and grindy.

I'll give them credit for making a single-player accessible MMO, one that stays as close to KotOR as it does in an MMO setting is impressive, but still misses the mark by quite a bit.

The music, worlds, atmosphere, etc is all very well done and enjoyable if you're a Star Wars fan. And for the first several levels, the gameplay is enjoyable as well.

But after your 40,000th fetch quest, your 50,000th "Go here and kill 20 XYZs and bring me their bodies" or "Go here and bring me X, which involves killing hundreds of XYZs too", my interest began waning.

If that doesn't bother you, or you don't mind grinding, it can be enjoyable.

But the waking up moment for me was on Hoth as a Jedi Knight, having to kill a certain number of Wompas for a quest and to level up, and I remember just watching TV, not even looking at the screen, while I clicked around for hours on end trying to level up. It was at that point, I realize I was trying to amuse myself while playing a game. My game...needed a game.

I cancelled my sub not long after.

Others said it I am going to repeat it. The single player stories are good as a paying playing. the gimping on f2p makes it almost unplayable IMO. Its free so why not try it and see if you like it. Once you get to level 20 or so, you should have a decent idea if you like it or not by then.

But after your 40,000th fetch quest,

You can get around that by playing the 2 space games (rail shooter and PVP) or by doing flashpoints, and it's really more like ~10 sidequests per planet, but yes that's something that KOTOR 1-2 didn't have as much of. It's maybe double the sidequests of KOTOR 1-2, and many of them are fun.

You can also get XP boosts to level up without sidequests, but those real money or in-game credits that you probably won't have as a new player.

. the gimping on f2p makes it almost unplayable IMO.

For endgame raiding maybe, but for single-player? F2P doesn't make you pay for any of the single-player content up to level 50 which is all of the class stories.

Anyway, it's free so give it a try.

As someone who never played any of the popular MMOs like WoW or Rift and as someone who was never interested in the genre itself, I managed to grind to the third planet. The introduction planet has enough good buildup that you hunger for the next quest. The second planet (for my characters) was Coruscant which started to build on the grinding aspects. By the end, I was tired of the environment.

Then the extreme repetitiveness I was expecting from the start kicked in around the third planet and my suspension of disbelief broke down. Another fetch quest? You need 5 of what and why? Don't you have a radio? The herd of peaceful grazers is 50 feet away, and you have a entire squad of elite troopers, go get the mumbo-jumbo organs yourself.

Take this anecdote from someone who avoids MMOs however you want.

That's typical of MMOs. The quests are filler, fetch quests are there to give you something to do and the appearance of there being lots of content. The reward is small usually as well.

Basically a WoW clone. The game has FULL voice acting which makes single player experience pretty nice.

If you are into the Star Wars lore/universe you will like the game compared to the Warcraft lore.

Imperial agent is universally considered the best story line in the game by a landslide.

I'm going to second the "meh to decent" sentiment, and also mention that the voice acting and SP campaigns are pretty enjoyable.

I also enjoyed the rails shooters.

NS1 - yes they brought out other ships for pvp......its pretty fun once you figure out what you're doing lol

I enjoy it raid with my guild as main tank; *they keep shouting at me to level something else I keep telling them to stick it...I like tanking lol* storylines are well done and worth playing for them alone.

Only truly way to know is to fire it up and play for yourself

Felt like a WoW clone and more single player however, SWG(Pre CU) was 100X better IMHO,too bad it ended.Maybe they will get it right with next Star Wars MMORPG down the road.

Its a fun single-player adventure that's set in a MMO. I had a lot more fun playing with my brother, because a lot of optional stuff is more enjoyable with 2 players IMHO, although not required. Its also fun to play through with 1-2 others using different classes, because you can participate in a good portion of their class stories along the way.

I did Sith Inquisitor and really enjoyed it. Was a lot of fun. End-game is pretty lame, but you can pay for a month and finish the main-story stuff easily and then go on and do a different game.

This MMO was redundant in my opinion. I played during launch hit the grind to level cap very quickly. Leveling was redundant. And then the game was extremely buggy as far as raids and pvp went. The game was not built on a strong foundation. Too much money went into too much nonsense.
