If you even have to think for a second on the question whether Star Wars is the best movie ever, then you should go watch other movies. I think you've missed a lot.

It's hard to discuss (or even decide for yourself) what is the best movie ever. My list of best single movie ever probably has like 10 films on it. But SW is definitely not one of them. I loved it when I saw (at release, as a 12 year old kid, with my dad in the cinema (and my dad never went to movies)). But it was, and still is, a movie for kids.

It was boring as hell. Fell asleep several times trying to watch the ice planet scene.

But if you're looking for unrealistic fight scenes, crappy characters without any character development, and special effects which were very good for its time but are now outdated I guess it would rank reasonably high.

Edit: And indeed, it's a kids movie. If you are over 12-15 and you think it's still a great movie you've definately not developped much mentally.

What SW, the original did, was to spark a new era of special effect driven movies and T.V. shows. Also ILM was created to innovate special effects to the next level.

THX sound was created by Lucas to give the audience the sound he wanted in his movies and recreate what here heard in nature. In tHe 80's and 90s most people when to the big screens with THX sound. I had friends that would only sit half way up and in the middle. It still prefer sitting there but my wife always wants to sit on the end.

no, not at all.

It's indisputable.

It's good, but I'd have a really hard time putting it heads and shoulders above others.

Blade Runner for example.

Close but not quite tops:
Terminator/T2
Jurassic Park
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Star Wars/RotJ

I need to give it time for the newness to wear off but possibly The Martian fits in there somewhere.

No. The best movie ever made was Krull.

After that its all bullshit and noise.

Too damned funny.

My future father-in-law at the time Krull came out was an executive VP at Payne Weber and he recommended we see it, as they did a lot of the financing I believe.

Was kind of hard giving him a face to face opinion of it afterwards.

Just another old odd story.

Blade Runner and Close Encounters are the only Sci Fi in your list, though. The rest are action/horror or Fantasy (Star Wars).

For Sci Fi, I put Blade Runner or Children of Men as number 2.

Honestly, 2001 easily wins the category because so much of what isn't really sci fi is commonly confused for sci fi. Also, because 2001 is just god damn perfect. Whether or not it is boring doesn't matter. Hell, my favorite film ever: 8 1/2, puts me to sleep nearly every time I watch it.

Kind of splitting hairs, sci-fi is theoretically possible just not technologically available, fantasy will never be available. Terminator/T2 is certainly sci-fi, even time travel is theoretical as well as the AI stuff is almost a reality now. JP is theoretically possible. The only thing with Star Wars that is fantasy is the force, but pretty much everyone considers it sci-fi anyways. Just go look at any sci-fi list.

And you missed my point.

Blade Runner is
overrated. I've watched it a number of times over 30 years, trying to see what other people like about it, but it just always comes across as pretentious and ham-handed. 2001 is also pretentious, but it walks the walk better than Blade Runner
.

8 1/2 pissed me off. I can't stand liars and cowards, so I spent the whole time wanting to kick the guy's ass.

Krull was pretty good except for that one part. And that other part.

Star Wars is not the best movie of all time. But considering the an epic score combined with an epic story that has all of the right things (laser sword wielding knights, space cowboys, space pirates) makes for one of the most memorable movies of all time. Let's be honest, the epic story is a rehash of old tales... but the score is what makes the movie. This is made evident by the trailer for The Force Awakens. Just hearing the old score from the original trilogy makes me smile.

Agreed (not sure why that's in spoilers). Every time I bring up how I don't like it, the responses I get are along the lines of "well it was game changing back when it was released" and "for the time period the visuals were unmatched". So what I can gather is that at some in time it might have LOOKED good, but now that time is long since gone... and the movie itself IMO is not good.

Those descriptions seem to depend on "robots/ships/concepts" as a single qualifier for sci fi...that really isn't the case.

Terminator, like Alien, is basically horror with a few sci fi elements (Space ships and robots, time travel, etc) but those films don't do much to explore any science or social concepts. Aliens is more action with sci fi elements, and nothing else beyond that. Similar with T2, though T2 expands the story out a bit and develops the whole time-travel judgement day, fate and all that. I'm slowly coming around to seeing that as Sci Fi, but it's not the greatest example.

Simply because future tech exists, doesn't really make something sci Fi. It's like showing Thelma and Louise to an audience from 1920 and calling it Sci Fi by virtue of the appearance of microwaves and a bitchin' Cadillac.

Blade Runner is weird in a way because there is very little to compare it to. It's sort of a noir sci fi and the first Philip K Dick film adaptation, I believe. So, knowing anything about PKD, his stuff can be very far out there (notable acid head, that one), but it is also probably the best of any sci fi you will find anywhere. One might naively go into this flick thinking "Androids..cool! lots of bitching robot fights!" Which I think is why it is difficult for people to swallow. It's not about androids, but about self-identity and humanity in a world where all non-human life has been virtually wiped out due to industrialization and over-development (the book goes into this much more--ownership of legitimate life, say a rabbit or goat, is the highest form of status. In contrast, anyone caught trying to pass off a robot sheep as real is summarily shunned).

Following up Aliens and in the same year as Empire Strikes Back, I think audiences were expecting "Cool! more action sci fi robots!" Instead, they actually got sci fi...for the first time in nearly 2 decades.

The more I think about it, you can probably rate really good sci fi on a scale that positively correlates to increasing boredom (anything that seriously focuses on complex concepts is usually going to be rather boring). A few that come to mind as not boring, though: Moon and Children of Men.

Oh, sure give him a pass on THAT as sci-fi!? I see how it is. :|

edit: I also love me some Krull.

I never agreed that it was sci fi. It's the exact same kind of fantasy as Star Wars. ...and was the b-rated cheap-o follow up to compete directly with SW.
