Punishment?
The last thing you want to do to someone that's suicidal is punish them.
I don't think it has ever been illegal.
On the other hand, you might be referring to the Christian belief that all life is sacred, and committing suicide is a sin.

Could also be deemed illegal to avoid life insurance payouts or something to that effect. Just guessing, though.

Life insurance doesn't pay out for suicides. I wonder though, what's the logic behind that? Are you somehow less dead if you kill yourself? Are they worried that people will jsut start killing themselves willy-nilly?

Q. Will benefits still be payable if I commit suicide?
A. Yes. Benefits are payable based on the death of an enrolled individual no matter how the death happened. However, if someone else causes your death, he or she may be excluded from receiving the death benefits.
The Office of Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance will not pay Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) benefits in a suicide case since the death is not accidental.
