Punishment?
The last thing you want to do to someone that's suicidal is punish them.

I don't think it has ever been illegal.

On the other hand, you might be referring to the Christian belief that all life is sacred, and committing suicide is a sin.

Well, it's apparent that you tried the search function and failed or didn't try the search function and failed anyway.

So, what should your punishment be?

Yes, suicide is illegal, most everywhere. But it's not something wich receives punishment. It's one of the few crimes a person can attempt that results in compulsory treatment.

It is illegal, it's illegal so the police can intervene and stop you from doing it. I think punishment is typically making you have to take treatment of some sort.

I believe the modern interpretation of that belief is "thou shalt not kill... unless you want to. In which case, knock yourself out."

Could also be deemed illegal to avoid life insurance payouts or something to that effect. Just guessing, though.

Life insurance doesn't pay out for suicides. I wonder though, what's the logic behind that? Are you somehow less dead if you kill yourself? Are they worried that people will jsut start killing themselves willy-nilly?

If your family clips you and makes it look like a suicide, they get the insurance money.

It is illegal but only in the terms that both civilians and law enforcenment can stop you and detain you if in the act. You cannot press charges against someone that prevents you from committing suicide.

Suicide = self-homicide...which is why it's illegal in most states.

I'm not so sure it should be illegal. If you really want to off your self, that's fine with me, just don't take anyone else with you when you go...oh yeah, don't do it in such a way that it screws up the commute...there's a special place in Hell (Michigan) for ass-hats that do that...

Q. Will benefits still be payable if I commit suicide?

A. Yes. Benefits are payable based on the death of an enrolled individual no matter how the death happened. However, if someone else causes your death, he or she may be excluded from receiving the death benefits.

The Office of Federal Employees' Group Life Insurance will not pay Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) benefits in a suicide case since the death is not accidental.

Sweet. I love the fact that this is a frequently asked question. As if people are aren't feeling suicidal at the moment, but they'd like to have the option open in case they change their minds.

a lot of older societies treated suicide as property theft. you were stealing the king/despot/warlord's property, you.

punishment could range to family punishment or body mutilation in public.
