So in those intense sequences in Crysis, data is being transferred faster along the 280's memory bus than the 4870's bus.

The X2 has a theoretically memory bandwidth of 230 GB/s while the GTX 280 has 142 GB/s. Of course, the memory is mirrored so that would probably mean that it does 115 GB/s per GPU, making it only 27GB/s "slower" then the GTX. So the bottom line is that the memory bandwidth has nothing to to with the stutter in FC2.

FarCry 2 is just broken on AMD's cards. ATi didn't managed to make drivers that would take the stutter away and neither the game producers bothered to create a patch. FarCry 2 is just not "meant to be played" on ATi cards.

the stuuttering most people are getting in Far Cry 2 has nothing to do with the video memory or at least not directly. its the games engine itself that has stuttering which seems much more prevalent in DX10 even though actual framerates are higher than in DX9. Far Cry 2 has little hitches in DX10 no matter what system i have installed it on. in fact just looking around a room in Far Cry 2 DX10 is much less smooth than DX9. Fallout 3 also has almost continuous little stutters when walking around outside from loading new areas. though that is a completely different kind of stuttering than Far Cry 2 it also doenst seem to matter how good of a system you have.

Uh, I guess I should have clarified that I didn't think that Far Cry 2's stuttering was related to video memory size (and I never claimed it was. Reading FTW!) I was just throwing that out there because... well it is the only game I've experienced any kind of stuttering on, so yeah

Of course it's mirrored, thus it does have less bandwidth. And, like I just said, I wasn't claiming this was the problem in FC2. I was suggesting that in Crysis, for apoppin and his HD4870s, that this could very likely be part of the problem. Besides, if you look just below my reply you'll see that I'm running an... HD3850! So I don't see why you're assuming that I'm implying memory bandwidth is the cause of stuttering in FC2, because clearly I'm not.

Later drivers have addressed many of my early issues with stuttering .. note the date of the original post .. back with Cat 8-8 and 8-9; we are waiting for 9-1 now

FarCry2 has some issues with 4870 512M .. a little less with the 1GB version and the X2 actually powers through it better than my GTX280
- and the GTX has no issues with FC2 that i have found

Cat 8-12 did nothing for FC2 .. i am hoping the frame rate cap workaround for 4870 is no longer necessary with 9-1
