Is the AMD APU disabled if a Nvidia card is used?

If I get your question right, you want to use the APU with the GPU.
The APU cann /only/ be used with an R7 260, IIRC. Otherwise it will be disabled.
If you get an Nvidia GPU, Physx won't be disabled.

The graphics component of any APU is disabled when you install any discrete GPU.

There are exceptions to the statement above, but they are rare and gimmicky.

Is this something new with APU's? This used to be possible with motherboard graphics. Most Intel motherboards I setup these days have an option to leave the IGP enabled even with a discrete card for Desktop triple monitor support.

Well, that's no good. Whats the point of a APU if its not a single entity? If I plug in another separate GPU in the PCie slot, then the APU just disables its built in GPU and loses its computing power then?

false, while gaming is a no-go, compute can be supported.

Yeah, but its still disabled on gaming. Is there a APU available that is enabled all the time whether a separate gpu is installed or not? I want to be able to use the APU's computing power all the time.

Just what monster said

You can use apu with nvidia gpu for compute - at least with kaveri:
This is A10-7850k boosting GTX580 compute performance by whooping 40%

Games are no go.

You can make a crossfire with amd card thou

Yeah, but that would mean getting a grahics card from both Nvidia and Ati. Then you would have to swap them out if you are gaming or not. Besides, who needs that much power when just computing? Most people need power for videos, games, etc...Oh wait, but Flash plugin still will take up at 10 core cpu all by itself.

I was really excited about this whole APU thing...I thought it was just one unit, but it looks like all it is is a cpu with integrated graphics. Seems like a gimmick, rather than something revolutionary now.

As somebody who has combined discrete with an APU, the APU's GPU is ALWAYS available for compute.

Lots of false information going on in this thread.

The benefit is there, but the support is weak. HSA is just starting and shows amazing benefits. But apart from few applications there is not much going for it now.

To me, it seems like this concept got borrowed from PS3's Cell, or was there another "APU" before that? But comparing it to the Cell, the cell was already heterogeneous, no? How come Intel/AMD are making that look like something new?

Anyhow, I am dissapointed. I think the future is a full 'one chip' where both the cpu/gpu are transparent and where a person could add another GPU separately to boost total performance, but this APU thing is a little backwards in a way.
