Depends where in Chicago you want to live. I think rents in Boston are generally higher though from what I remember.

I don't understand why people thing NYC is nuts. I've been there plenty of times, and it isn't that crazy at all. Sure theres a lot of people but it isn't ungodly. It's not that dirty, either.

well, boston isn't exactly a major metropolis. the reason rent is artificially high (at real city rates) is because there is so much demand from colleges and universities in the area.

Where the heck did you get "cheap rent" from? The city is almost always more expensive per square foot.

Personally I fucking hate big cities for all the reasons you listed. But I'm of the "people are no damn good" variety. And since my favorite activities are things like hiking, back-road driving, listening to loud music, and sitting at beaches that aren't covered in garbage, that pretty much rules out the big cities, even if I liked people. Which I don't. Also, I really don't like people.

Assuming he means NYC then it is a city. However, the OP was so generic it could be any city, and that seems to be what the OP was asking to me - "is it better to live in a city".

What I'm really talking about is large metropolitan areas. NYC, LA, Chicago, all good examples. In these areas it gets more suburban as you sprawl outward, that is what I mean by suburb vs city.

Some parts are, but not all of the city is. The Center City and Washington Square West sections are very nice, along with most of Southeast Philly.

I'm with you... I'm not a huge fan of city either... and I hate people to some degree too.
