Is the era of "cheap" Chinese labor at an end? A good thing?

IMHO the Chinese Government's decision to raise their minimum wage up to 21% is a good thing for those outside of China as it makes Chinese labor that much less attractive (as stated in the article).

We'll see if this is anything more than a token action to make it look like they're actually doing something. The US has been breathing down their neck for a while now about them manipulating currency and other tactics so I guess we'll see.

I wouldn't be surprised to find that minimum wage gets boosted at the expense of the middle class, which will actually hurt China, as its their growing middle class that was their real strength more recently. That will also hurt foreign companies that were making inroads into China, as the middle class was their opportunity to reach the massive Chinese population.

Africa doesn't have enough infrastructure yet. Of course, with enough investment, it could have in a decade or two.

I suspect India might take on more and more as the last I read, China is about 4X as much costs as India right now.

meh, not as soon as people think. Its still extremely cheap, and on top of it the infrastructure has been built up over 20 years in China for this stuff. Let us say outsourcing goes en mass somewhere else; you'll still need the capital to build the buildings, and it will still take time to do so....whereas for a few bucks more (Which is already very cheap compared to what it would have been in the USA) you get access to this massive capital base with all the trained Chinese manufacturing engineers.

China has been building infrastructure in Africa... for over 10 years.

Already occurs in Africa, India, Malaysia, Indonesia, etc... Cheap labor is easy to find, you just need to invest in the infrastructure which was done in China and can be done easily elsewhere.

The reason China is great for manufacturing is becuase they have highly skilled workers, highly educated workers, and infrastructure.

Probably the next viable area is India. The workforce is there, but the infrastructure SUCKS. I mean there's rarely addresses on anything and the poverty is ridiculous.

Vietnam is another possibility. But again, the infrustructure is a mess.
