is the new P8400 worth it compared to a T5800?

i cant find anything on the web on the new T5800 that gives more details on it's characteristics or its performance benchmarks. is it a rebadged t7250 and if so how much of a difference in performance is it from a p7350 2ghz or even a p8400. i was looking in to a new laptop and this looks to offer the best bang for buck. the next level upgrade is a p8400 which will cost $100 more. is that worth it? how much more real world performance will i notice? i was thinking i could save that $100 for another laptop in the future knowing that technology goes down in price faster than anything else. i am buying a fast depreciating asset. i was thinking it might not be worth the upgrade price if there is no real appreciable increase in speed. thanks!

Probably about 10% slower at most clock-per-clock with the improvements penryn made and the slightly bigger L3$. The big thing with the P-series is that they only have a 25w TDP instead of 35w like the T-series.

I researched this too. I just ordered a Dell Studio 17 laptop on Black Friday...and upgraded to the P8400 option for an extra $125, instead of the T5800.

Is it worth it? I will let you know. My concern was more due to longevity of the laptop and my own impatience. Every other option on the laptop was optimized...so I feel pretty good about my decision. Also, I will be installing Windows 7 on it when the time comes..

Can a processor be too fast? No. Can they be at an unreasonable price point? Yes.

The biggest advantage will probably be the power savings. It would probably only amount to 10-30 minutes of extra battery life at best, but every bit counts.

The speed difference really depends on what you're planning on doing with it. If you're browsing the Internet, writing emails, coding, doing school work, and other related tasks, you probably won't notice a difference. If you're doing anything that's going to have the processor flat-out for a while (encoding, rendering, certain games, etc.) you'll probably notice a difference.
