Is the stock HSF on a Venice 3000+ the same as the stock HSF on an X2 3800+

no, i believe the x2s use a heatsink which has heatpipes

While the Venices use a generic aluminum heatsink, the X2s have some monstrous heatpipes inserted into an aluminum heatsink with I believe a copper base.

In the CPU forum one of the reasons people give to get the Opteron 165 instead of the X2 3800 is that the 3800 does not come with the heatpipe cooler.

I'd goto the CPU forum to confirm.

I'm not sure that its the same one as the Venice 3000+ ... but from what I've read on the CPU forum ... i'm pretty sure that it doesn't come with the heatpipe cooler.

No, the X2 3800+ does not come with a HSF with heatpipes.

I personally thought this was the case too... Could be mistaken of course... It will probably be sufficient... Don't expect freezing temperatures however...

I believe it is the same heatsink cooler. It might not be identical, but I had both heatsinks at a time, and I dont recall any differences. Only above 3800+ do they have the copper heatpipes. The 3800 has the normal crappy cooler.

alternativly you could snag a Opteron 165 with the heatpipe cooler for less then $320

I have an x2 3800+ and a Sempron 2600+. They both have the same exact heatsink. The included fan is different, with the x2 unit having a higher RPM fan with a different number of blades and shape. The physical size of the fan was the same (70x70x10). I had held both heatsinks in my hands at the same time and examined them.
