Is there a big difference between Down Comforters and Down-Alternative Comforters?

I'm trying to figure out which I should buy.

One is down, one isn't? Seriously though, I just looked that up and it's pretty much what you'd expect - synthetic materials. I don't think there is any standard in terms of what constitutes the alternative.

The "down-alternative" ones are just misdiagnosed and probably don't even have down at all.

Welp, down is such a big selling point, they hate to expunge it from the label. So they leave it on ... even though the comforter is wholly devoid of down.


Personally, I'd call them "up comforters" ... because that's the alternative to "down."

Down alternative is usually heavier than cotton to simulate the weight of down. Real down will poke you with it's feathers and is more lumpy than down alternative.

Prefer down alt. Down is cool but can't really be washed properly, gets poky with age, and can be super lumpy.

Wool only has an advantage if it gets wet. Does your bed get wet?
