Is there a big difference in taste between the various trout?

I just bought the cheapest kind, rainbow trout. I cooked it using this method:

There was no sauce left, but the trout is nice and moist. The taste is somewhat... earthy. Kinda muddy, but I guess that's freshwater fish for ya. I think I prefer ocean fish.

Oh shoot! I was just on wikipedia and it says, "Rainbow trout has tender flesh and a mild, somewhat nutty flavor. However, farmed trout and those taken from certain lakes have a pronounced muddy flavor which many people find unappealing; many shoppers therefore make it a point to ascertain the source of the fish before buying."

I guess I got farmed trout or trout caught in a muddy location

How does one find out where the trout came from? I don't expect grocery store butchers would know...

I do a lot of trout fishing. The best tasting are those either a) spawned in the stream or b) stocked and in the stream a year or two, but even if not they are still good. The meat is actually pink as opposed to white from stock raised trout.

I suggest grilling your trout over charcoal briquetts BUT with low heat; be careeful because trout will cook very fast this way, but most of the bones come out easily. While grilling add butter, lemon, and pepper with a little sauce. The chacoal smoke adds great flavor. Try dipping the meat in butter.

And, no, I don't think there is much difference between the trout species when it comes to taste, just where and how they were raised.

The trout that I got was pink, so I guess it was caught wild, just not in a very good location?

I think next time I'm going to try broiling it in a cast iron skillet with some liquid smoke, or just pan frying it. Can the skin be pan-fried so that it's tasty and edible?

Yes, you can cook trout with their skin. No need to scale this species and the skin peels off quite nicely after you cook it. As for it being caught wild? No, it probably it was what they fed it while it was being raised. Trout need cold, fresh water to survive. Taste depends on the environment it was raised in.

Understandably not, since their expertise lies elsewhere.

But, fear not for your trout-eating future. The provenance of your trout can be swiftly and easily determined by the pitch of it's slap. A solid, somewhat bass-toned "thwack" is best.

Being a bunny, your personal expertise obviously lies more along the carrot/lettuce continuum, with a minor in endlessly exuberant fornication.

Fortunately, a dedicated band of English aquatic quality control experts has issued a helpful, how-to video.

There is a large difference in the various trout species. (duh, otherwise they'd be the same!)
Most likely, the ones you bought in the store are farm-raised, as that's the only way to control quality and health of the animals...(often packaged as Idaho Rainbow trout with a nice orangeish-pink coloration.)
Farm raised trout (to me) all tastes the same. Like pellets...
Wild caught trout, from cold clear streams tastes completely different, My favorites are Brook trout, cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden (char) a few others including browm trout, and last on my list are the rainbows. However, ALL wild caught trout are FAR superior to the stuff sold in the grocery store.
Sometimes it's difficult telling "true wild fish" from those that are hatchery raised, but after they've had a couple of seasons eating bugs, it really doesn't matter any more. Even the hatchery trout will taste good...
