To each his own and that includes reviews and reviewers. I have read many positive review and did before I bought mine (model 600). I have had absolutely no problems, it plays mp3's, vcd's, svcd's, etc. It plays cdr's and cdrw's. There is not a more versatile player out there for the money. Picture is great sound is pretty good, maybe a bit too much through-put to the center channel. I paid $199 6 months ago and now their newer comparable model is around $119. Hell, at these prices the thing is almost disposable. Depends on what you want. I like the ability to throw 150 mp3's on a CDRW at 10X-12X and be listening in my living room in minutes. I also like the ability to rip my home movies onto CDR/RW w/menu and enjoy them on my TV.

moi - look around, read many reviews and consider everyone's opinion before you buy. Going with one review or one opinion is not a good idea. If someone says only it "sucks" and doesn't own it, then discount that opinion immediately.

Good luck,

LJ

Hmmm... let's see I've had mine (w/ the loophole menu of course ) for well over a year, played well over 150 movies without a problem, bought one for my dad this past christmas w/ no problems, and my boss got one at christmas too, again w/ no problems.

But we should all listen to CigarSmokedByClinton (who has most likely never even used one), because he inteligently says, and I quote "Apex sucks".

Damn guess I better sell mine, and dads, tell the boss to get rid of his too of course!!!

Apex is the only dvd player that plays mp3s. But it sucks major @ss. If you want to use it to play mp3s cool. Picture and sound quality from it well watching dvds is horrid at best when compared to different companies at the same price. Did I mention it doesn't output true 24/96 sound either?

The above posters are correct in saying I don't own one, but incorrect in saying that I never have. I Bought one last fall, and I plugged it in, and it didn't work. So I brought it back and got another one. I pooped in a DVD, and it played fine, but the picture and sound quality was horrible compared to what I got over my Creative DVD Inlay Decoder board. I have my MP3's hooked up to my stereo via my computer via a 50' wire. I just wasn't goin to put up with the lack of picture quality or sound quality with this $150 piece of junk when I have a $30 decoder board that does the job just fine.

I agree, if someone says it sucks but has never tried it, they have no call to asserting a judgement on that piece of equipment. But this just isn't true in my case.

And for all of you who are pleased, good for you, maybe I just got two bad units, but teh folks on www.audioreview.com concur with ME. And they all own it.

So my opinion stands : Apex SUCKS

My friend picked up the 3 disc version of the Apex. It works fine for him. The picture quality is fine as far as I can tell and the audio is ok too. The mp3 feature is really nice too. He's had it for two months with no problems.

Apex 703 doesn't have digital optical output, only coax.
Make sure you buy reciever, that supports coax. All new are optical.
Friend of mine has one and he is happy.

Another model is Samsung 711(single disc), but ratings are VERY low.

Both now are going around $180 in BestBuy or Circuit City. You can get online little cheapper.

Apex is the most common model out there that will play MP3's, though i sure there is a few more. I keep thinking the Aiwa 370 can, but i'm not sure. If i can remember any over the weekend i'll post.

Today I went to Circuit City store , they had the Aiwa "AIWXDDV370" for $219 , it says on it MP3 Decoding & the salesman says it does play MP3's & audio CD's , he's not sure about cdr's & cdrw's , is it a good unit? better than Apex?
Thanks

I also have the 3-disk apex. works fine so far, had it over a month. Didn't work with a divx I had but that could have just been cause it was a different version of divx than it can play. this is the extension: divx-rmd anyone know why it can't play it? It supposed to be able to play divx if i remember right.

As someone who currently uses and owns both a Creative PC-DVD and an Apex with loophole menu, I like to form my own opinions and make my own recommendations rather than relying strictly on the www.audioreview.com crew to do my thinking for me. Personally, I think my Apex ROCKS for the price. And I don't even use the MP3 feature...

CigarSmokedByClinton's opinion, as he pointed out, still stands of course but only as a single opinion among many. However, after hearing that he runs MP3 audio from a sound card to a stereo with a 50' run of cable, I have to wonder what the www.audioreview.com snobs would say about _that_. Hopefully it's one of the higher-rated audiophile quality 50' cables with maybe a solid silver core or at least oxygen-free copper.

www.audioreview.com and epinions.com and all the other opinion sites are extremely useful as a starting point and although I use them regularly I still try to check out a product myself and draw my own conclusions. For that reason I try to do most of my buying from stores with a liberal return policy and I recommend that other folks do the same.

This is good, civil thread. There are obviously some good and bad stories about the APEX. My buddy bought a $450 Panasonic player and I made him bring it back and check out the APEX. He still has it and is happy. He was leery though so he bought the extended warranty so he can bring it back for any reason within the warranty period. Personally, I never buy extended warranties, I take my chances, if it is a good product, it should not need an extended warranty. However, you may want to check this out if you are not sure.

I also have a Phillips Magnavox DVD711 that has optical. I gotta say that "I love my Apex 703" I play VCD's and the Phillips Magnavox can't play most movies. I like the MP3 feature of the Apex that my more expensive Phillips Magnavox cannot play. It's nice having 3 discs filled with MP3s. Also the fact that most my VCD movies are 2 discs which means I don't have to get up to change discs. Quality is great and I use the s-video on my Apex and Phillips Magnavox. I love my Apex!

I almost forgot about this one.

CigarSmokedByClinton Pretty funny. I went from a CL decoder card to my Apex. Mainly cause I wanted a remote, and a little easier use. Anyway. The Apex is still better IMO, but I think you did get a couple of bad units.

I checked my local CC, before I bought mine to make sure they had quite a few just incase this happened to me. I had read that you either get a good, or bad one, and that there was a lot of already opened boxes, but this was over a year ago. They've changed since then, and have gotten better. I actually got a remote that's gouged on the bottom, but kept it, cause I didn't want to risk getting a bad one. Those days are over though. They've upped their quality from what I've seen/read.

Hey it's dirt cheap, and does what you want. Get the Apex.

I have an apex...not sure which one at the moment, but its able to play mp3, vcd, svcd, dvd, cd. And when i say mp3, i mean you can burn mp3's onto a cd-r and play it in the player. Same thing for vcd/svcd also.
